NEW YORK (AP) ? Apple is expected to unveil a new version of the iPad at an event in San Francisco next week.

Apple sent out invitations to news media on Tuesday with an image showing part of an iPad screen. The company had been widely expected to reveal the third version of its popular tablet computer soon, close to the anniversary of the launch of the iPad 2.

The event will take place next Wednesday at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater, where Apple holds larger launch events.

Since the first iPad came out in 2010, sales of traditional computers have slowed in the U.S. and other wealthy countries. Rival PC and phone makers have been unable to mirror Apple's success with their own tablet computers. Apple has sold 55 million iPads so far, about the same as the estimated number of Mac computers in use.

Apple Inc. didn't provide any details on the new device. Various unconfirmed reports speak of a sharper screen and faster cellular broadband options.

It's not known when such a new device would be available for sale. Last year, sales of the iPad 2 began in the U.S. nine days after the announcement.

CULVER CITY, Calif. (AP) ? YouTube is enlisting Hollywood's help to reach a generation of viewers more familiar with smartphones than TV remotes.

The online video giant is aiming to create 25 hours of programming per day with the help of some of the top names in traditional TV. The Google-owned site is spreading its wealth among producers, directors, and other filmmakers, using a $100 million pot of seed money it committed last fall. The fund represents YouTube's largest spending on original content so far.

YouTube believes it is laying groundwork for the future. While the number of traditional TV watchers has leveled off in recent years, more and more people are watching video on mobile phones, tablets and computers, especially the 18- to 34-year-old age demographic that advertisers covet.

The idea is to create 96 additional YouTube channels, which are essentially artists' home pages, where viewers can see existing video clips and click "subscribe" to be notified when new content goes up.

Well-funded videos by a select roster of stars are likely to be more watchable than the average YouTube fare of cute cats and webcam monologues. YouTube is betting that a solid stream of good content will attract more revenue from advertisers, bring viewers back frequently and bolster its parent company's fledgling Web-connected-TV platform, Google TV.

The cash has enticed some of TV's biggest stars, including "Fast Five" director Justin Lin, who directs episodes of "Community," ''CSI" creator Anthony Zuiker and Nancy Tellem, the former president of CBS entertainment.

Zuiker is teaming up on a horror series for YouTube after observing his own family's behavior. His three pre-teen sons spend more time on phones, iPads and computers than watching TV these days.

"We want to jointly take the risk with YouTube and roll the dice on the future," Zuiker says. "The old regime is going to falter because everybody thinks the TV is the only device that really counts, and that's just not the case."

For producers, it's a chance to create shows that are completely free of meddling from major studios. They can also stay relevant with a younger crowd whose viewing is moving increasingly online.

Several new channels such as the extreme sports-focused Network A and Spanish-language Tutele have launched already. YouTube hopes to have them all up and running by this summer.

"This was really about galvanizing the ecosystem at large," says Alex Carloss, global head of original programming for YouTube. "We see the portfolio (of funded channels) really representing the best of TV meeting the best of the Web."

YouTube isn't the only Web video service that has started to pay for original content. Netflix Inc. recently launched the original series "Lilyhammer," while Hulu premiered "Battleground." But YouTube videos tend to be under 10 minutes, instead of fitting into traditional half-hour or hour-long TV slots. And aside from a few guidelines, ultimate control is given over to the artist, including what is uploaded and when new episodes appear.

YouTubers also get away with far edgier stuff than the middle finger that rapper M.I.A. flashed during the Super Bowl halftime show.

Although YouTube's entire investment is less than half of what some studios spend on one blockbuster movie, about a third of the new channels were awarded to scrappy YouTube veterans who already know how to make it big online while keeping production costs low.

YouTube expects to recoup what it spends on the grants by sharing ad revenue the new videos generate.

At Maker Studios, which received money for three new channels, the funds have turbo-charged an already teeming operation that has about 160 full-time staff spread across several buildings crammed with props and computers in the west Los Angeles suburb of Culver City.

On a recent visit, two scenes were being shot in an alley. One was for a parody of a Christmas movie trailer. The other was for a new series about a crime-fighting van called "Si, Es I, Pepe."

Maker cranks out about 300 YouTube videos each month at a bare-bones cost of about $1,000 each.

The studio's videos generate a whopping 500 million views each month, thanks largely to established hits that include Ray William Johnson's roundup of crazy videos and such viral giants as "Epic Rap Battles of History."

Advertisers pay up to $10 per thousand views for video ads that precede the featured content, according to TubeMogul, a major buyer of YouTube ads for the nation's biggest advertisers including Proctor & Gamble Co. and News Corp.'s 20th Century Fox movie studio.

Established YouTube partners share roughly half of their revenue with the site. So if Maker videos generate $1 or $2 in ad revenue per thousand views, it would just be scraping by.

Maker co-founder Danny Zappin, who quit film school to buy a high-end camera to start a career on YouTube, says it's a "tricky balance" to keep the studio's share of ad revenue higher than the cost of video-making. The undisclosed amount it got from YouTube, on top of the $1.5 million venture capital it received about a year ago, lets Maker put up more videos without waiting for the views and cash to roll in.

"It gives us resources and runway that we wouldn't otherwise have," Zappin said.

For other less-established players in online video, the money has given them an added reason to get involved.

Former CBS executive Tellem teamed up with TV entrepreneur Brian Bedol to create Bedrocket Media Ventures, an upstart production company behind several new YouTube channels, including Network A. The funding "allowed us, or caused us, to focus on YouTube ahead of other platforms," Bedol says.

Analysts believe YouTube has made a wise investment at a time ad rates for online video are rising.

YouTube can be successful with just a few big hits ? think of Rebecca Black's "Friday" ? even if thousands of videos fall flat. It's similar to the hit-or-miss approach to traditional TV and movies.

"The investor community does not look at this as money wasted," Macquarie analyst Ben Schachter says.

Since promising to share ad revenue with its most popular uploaders in 2007, YouTube has invested in original content mainly by paying for equipment and training new artists, but it was never as big as this.

Backing up its new strategy, YouTube also revamped its homepage to prioritize channels and recommendations above just the most-viewed videos. The revamp allows advertisers to target popular channels or categories of content more easily.

YouTube's funding plan takes a page from Apple Inc.'s playbook. When the iPhone maker launched its App Store in 2008, a $100 million seed fund created by Silicon Valley investor John Doerr spawned hundreds of thousands of new apps.

"Our developers are not software engineers," YouTube's vice president of global content partnerships, Robert Kyncl, told a convention in January. "Our developers are Hollywood stars, are online stars, are regular folks like you and I."

If nothing else, the injection of funds will spawn content never before been seen on any screen, large or small.

"Fast Five" director Lin, who is teaming up with YouTube stars Ryan Higa and Kevin "KevJumba" Wu on the "YOMYOMF" channel, said his focus is not to try to find audiences with stereotypical Asian-American content. Rather, the idea is to give a platform to people who have unique voices but haven't been heard yet.

He says Higa and Wu didn't follow any set rules when they jumped to popularity with a mix of oddball humor, brutal honesty and rap.

"They just did what they loved, and people came," Lin said. "If we're going to fail, I would rather go out with that philosophy."

Murder by 4: For Writers: Blogging - What's the big deal?

The Beginning

I'd just finished my sixth book in May of 2005, when I was approached by Bob Burdick to create a piece for his book-lovers' website. "Just tell us about your writer's life, how you manage to work and write at the same time. Tell us about the person you are, and how it all fits together."

I'd never really written much more than fiction, emails, and tech reports at work. And I wasn't sure how to begin. So, as I normally do, I just started writing.

I think back to that day as the unleashing of a whole different type of writing. This was personal, easy-to-read, and fun writing. Sort of like emailing one of my fans, or speaking one-on-one to a newbie writer who approached me for advice at a book signing.

At the time, I didn't think of it as blogging, per se. I didn't really know what a blog was back then. So I called the torrent of mini-essays that ensued "Seedlings" columns. I thought of them as "little seeds of ideas that sprouted in my brain while driving to work or before falling asleep. Not enough to flesh out into novels, by any means, but insistent enough to require capturing, all the same."?

A Blog by Any Other Name...

Since 2005, I've written over a hundred and fifty articles. These pieces range from 500 to 1500 words, and cover topics like writing tips and advice, a writer's life, book reviews, promotional tips, slices of life, etc. I keep a spreadsheet that lets me track where and when I've posted or guest-posted, and the list, in itself, has grown dramatically.?

Writers need to establish personal blogs to help promote their work, network with readers and writers, and to provide a home for their articles. But that's not really enough, these days. It's also good to get on a regularly published list of literary journals, group blogs, social media sites, etc. if you can. For example, my short pieces go up monthly at sites like the Future Mystery Anthology Magazine, and The Voice in the Dark Literary Journal.

I also post weekly at a collaborative blog with three other mystery writers, entitled Murderby4. Every Sunday, I write a piece for Murderby4, then post it on my personal blog, and copy it over to one of my favorite social media sites, Gather.com. Often I'll have the energy to do the same at some of the .ning groups, like The Book Marketing Network, or Book Blogs. I also keep a list of subjects I want to write about so I don't run out of ideas. Don't get me wrong - sometimes I come up empty-handed. It's hard to have a column ready every week, never mind while keeping up with the current WIP. I don't know how those newspaper columnists do it!

Why Blog? (I Just Wanna Write!)


Why do we do this? What's the benefit? And how can we justify taking time away from our "real" writing to do these short little blogs?

First of all, it's about connecting with people; connecting on a deep down, personal level. If you can relate to your readers, they might wander over to see what else you've written. Perhaps they'll check out your books. And maybe even buy some! More often than not, however, you'll find the benefit of blogging is a gateway to meeting wonderful people who often are in your boat. These writers may have their own blogs, may be looking for guest posts, just like you. Little by little, by sharing, networking, and helping each other, you can all gain more exposure to readers and blog followers by holding hands and posting each other's pieces. There's a lot of synergy in that model. And eventually, assuming your books are good, you'll start to grow a nice audience for your work.


Giving Back

Of course, you also want to offer something of value to your followers. In addition to hopefully entertaining them, giving them a bit of a laugh from time to time, and offering the benefit of your own observations and experience, you want to help them on their own journey. Be open to newbie writers who have never written a blog in their life. Offer to showcase their new book. Ask folks whose books you've read to guest blog for you. You'll be surprised at how many of the best selling authors actually respond and appreciate the option of reposting their blogs on your site. Always be willing to pay it forward, and offer freebies off and on like contests where folks can win a copy of your eBook(s) or print books. You can host other author's giveaways--that's always a treat for readers--but be sure you don't make the conditions for winning too hard. That never works. My version of blogging doesn't necessarily meet all the "rule of thumb" advice that I'd stumbled on over the past seven years. So, I don't follow those rules, and in the course of letting myself navigate through this mire with my own instincts, I've managed to create a pretty decent platform. The last time I googled my name, I got over 4,000 hits, mostly from the articles I've written. I've tried to help writers by sharing advice and tips, and have connected on a deep level with so many wonderful folks, not limited to writers or readers. It's been a good run, and I'm grateful for all the folks I've met through this process.

How to Get Started??

Don't let all this scare you if you haven't ever blogged or are just about to release your first novel. It's a growing and learning process that comes with time.?

Start with your own blog. Gather up your book cover images, a headshot if you like, and links you might like to add to the side bar. If you already have books to sell, sign up for Amazon Associates and get your product links. You can also create mini-slideshows where you feature your own book covers, and it's really easy to copy the code onto your own blog sidebar.?

Blogs are fairly easy and intuitive to create, using a platform like Blogger or WordPress. Usually it's all free, too.?

With Spotify recently topping 3-million subscribers to become one of the world?s largest subscription music services, the music industry?s tone is beginning to warm towards digital streaming.

Even Warner Music, one of Spotify?s staunchest critics a few years ago, has been won over, with CEO Steve Cooper telling analysts recently that streaming services are ?coming on strong?. Although they generate less than 10% of digital revenue, their faster growth rate than downloads means ?you will eventually see those lines cross?, Cooper said.

Adele and other holdouts such as The Beatles are becoming the ?corner cases?, says Ken Parks, Spotify?s chief content officer. ?These just happen to be higher-profile examples. The vast majority of artists and their labels are behind this model.?

Rob Wells, Universal Music?s digital president, said last month the cannibalisation argument was ?totally bogus?. His remarks came as the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry revealed that digital music revenue had risen 8% last year to $5,2bn, up from 2010?s 5% growth rate. While the payout every time a track is played on streaming services is smaller than for a download on the likes of iTunes, successful artists can, over time, see a larger dividend as the number of listens accumulates.

The newfound support from music labels is helping some digital music services to move from regional champions to global businesses. Rhapsody, which pioneered the subscription model when it launched in the US a decade ago, has bought Napster from Best Buy to launch in the UK and Germany. Deezer, after working for four years in its native France, has launched in dozens of countries in Europe and Latin America since December. That?s quite a change in the music industry?s tune from two years ago, when Spotify was struggling to secure rights to launch in the US.

Tim Hadley, director at Rara.com, which has launched in 20 countries since December, says: ?It has taken a while to get here but it now feels like digital music services are being licensed on a global basis.?

Rhapsody?s president, Jon Irwin, says this new expansion is down to improvements in both business models and technology.

?In the last couple of years, technology moved to the point where smartphones and networks make the product experience so powerful,? he says. More than 40% of activity on Rhapsody comes from mobile devices such as Android and iPhone. With so many ?unlimited? music streaming services competing at the same ?10, ?10 or $10 monthly price point, differentiation is as much down to packaging as product.

The ambitious ?freemium? service of Spotify, where users can listen to hours of music a month without paying, in return for listening to ads, contrasts with Rara?s more traditional method of discounting the first month?s fee. Deezer has placed emphasis on bundling the cost into mobile and broadband packages from France Telecom.

?The one thing rights holders require is a differentiated service,? says Rara?s Hadley. ?They don?t want five services targeting the same consumer.?

Rara is targeting consumers who fuelled Adele?s success through traditional CD sales but remain bewildered by the digital world ? accounting for some 70% of the UK population, according to an ICM poll that Rara commissioned.

At the current ?120 annual pricing, they may struggle to win over the average Adele fan, who may buy just a handful of albums a year. But the opportunity to double music fans? average spend is exactly why labels are so excited by subscription services.

Mark Mulligan, an independent music analyst, predicts a balance may be struck between holdouts such as Adele and the streaming services by introducing ?windowing?, where albums? releases are staggered across different services.

BAHIA HONDA KEY, Fla. ? For more than a year, Bahia Honda State Park biologist Jim Duquesnel traversed the nature sanctuary with two hopes. He wanted to see a Miami blue butterfly and rid the Florida Keys outpost of as many iguanas as he could.

The reason: The Central American invader may be driving the Miami blue into extinction by eating the leaves where it lays its eggs ? a bit of butterfly caviar in every bite.

No confirmed Miami blues have been seen on Bahia Honda since July 2010, and with each passing day it becomes less likely any exist there. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service last August issued an emergency listing of the Miami blue as an endangered species and three similar butterflies ? cassius blue, ceranus blue and nickerbean blue ? as threatened. The emergency listing continues through April, and federal officials may make it permanent.

In the listing, federal officials noted that the only surviving Miami blue population appears to be a few hundred living in the Key West National Wildlife Refuge, about 50 miles west of Bahia Honda.

Still, Duquesnel has tried to keep hope alive ? and eradicate the iguana from his 600-acre park in the Middle Keys.

Perhaps, he says, a half dozen Miami blues survive on some corner of the island, waiting for the right weather to emerge.

"And if that happens and the weather starts changing and if Miami blues start breeding, we want them to find this a good place to be doing that like they used to," he says. "In this case, that means it will be lacking in iguanas."

If the Miami blue makes a comeback, it wouldn't be the first time.

The pale blue butterfly ? about the size of a quarter ? was once ubiquitous in the hardwood hammocks, pines and scrub along the Florida coasts from the Keys north to Tampa Bay on the Gulf Coast and Cape Canaveral on the Atlantic. But the region's development after World War II slowly shrank its habitat until by the early 1990s it was found only in the Keys.

After the monstrous winds of Hurricane Andrew blew through the islands in 1992, no Miami blues were to be found and many thought them extinct.

But seven years later, a colony of 50 was found in Bahia Honda and it slowly grew.

Their population grew into the hundreds, until they were easy to spot year round from public trails. Jaret Daniels, a butterfly specialist at the University of Florida, remembers Miami blues landing on his hat.

"You could always swat them away. There were hundreds," Daniels says. "I'm sure thousands of people walked by with Miami blues flying around them."

Daniels and other scientists collected Miami blues from the park for a captive breeding program at the University of Florida's Maguire Center for Lepidoptera and Environmental Research. Roughly 30,000 were bred in a lab from 2003 to 2010, and Florida scientists transplanted the butterflies in the Upper Keys to try to expand the Miami blue's geographic range.

None of those colonies survived, but scientists clung to hope for the species because a new population of Miami blues was discovered in 2006 on a remote island in the Key West refuge.

But then, after a 2008 drought followed by cold snaps in 2009 and 2010, the population in Bahia Honda began a significant decline. Green iguanas soon emerged as a likely suspect in their demise.

The large, vegetarian lizards, probably the descendants of pets released by their owners when they grew too big or burdensome, had developed a taste for the nickerbean leaves where Miami blues laid their eggs. The nickerbean was among the only plants to quickly recover from the cold snaps, and the iguanas chewed through them, likely eating any butterfly eggs clinging to the leaves.

Duquesnel got the news that the Miami blue had received an emergency endangered listing while making his way to the old Bahia Honda Rail Bridge, brandishing a noose at the end of a long pole, which he uses to catch iguanas. He had set metal traps baited with sliced cherries, nectarines and strawberries in more restricted areas of the park, and now he was stalking the lizard from the public trail.

That day, there was no shortage of butterflies flitting about Bahia Honda: cassius blues and one ceranus blue, rust-and-gray Eastern pygmy blues, gulf fritillaries, skippers, bright orange sulphurs, a black-winged swallowtail and a handful of other species that fluttered away before they could be identified. Duquesnel also caught four iguanas, but saw no Miami blues.

In the winter, volunteer snowbirds help Duquesnel tally butterflies in the park. They carry clipboards with a picture of the Miami blue alongside pictures of the cassius blue, ceranus blue and nickerbean blue.

"I tell the volunteers you only need to identify one butterfly: the Miami blue. If you can do that, then you can help. Anything else is a bonus," Duquesnel says.

By helping to record what species are present in the park, the volunteers are supplying Duquesnel and other scientists with data that may help determine if something besides iguanas contributed to the Miami blue's disappearance. It could be the pressure from development eating up habitat, pesticides, droughts, the effects of climate change, over-collecting by butterfly enthusiasts, cold snaps or accidental harm caused by human behavior ? or something else scientists haven't identified yet.

But iguanas are something Duquesnel can catch.

When Duquesnel was hired in November 2010, he saw 40 or 50 adult iguanas a day in the park. Now he sees just a couple big ones a day, and they're harder to catch because they've adapted to his hunting and trapping. To keep the lizards guessing, he tries to tag along with tourists walking along the trails.

"They know the difference between looked or gawked at and being stalked," he says.

It's too soon to say whether more than a year of trapping iguanas has had any significant impact other than reducing their numbers, Duquesnel said recently. The iguanas he catches now still have bellies full of nickerbean, and the plants show signs of being nibbled, but whether iguanas or insects are to blame, he can't say.

And if the Miami blue never returns to Bahia Honda, Duquesnel still wants to make the park's environment better for all butterflies landing there.

"Even if Miami blue goes extinct, we should still remove iguanas," he says.

Little M. has been invited to a Valentine party...a Valentine TEA party, to be precise.?

He doesn't like tea.

Did I tell her that?? He doesn't like tea and he doesn't want to drink it at the party.?

Did I tell her that?

The invitation came, via Facebook, a few weeks ago.? I didn't mention it to him right away.? When he knows of an upcoming event that he's not quite sure he's excited about, the questions and musings are relentless.? I waited until the party was just a week away, then I mentioned it.?

"Hey, Little M., you like to play at G, V and L's house, don't you?? Did you know that they are having a Valentine party next Saturday?? You're invited.? That'll be fun, won't it?"

He agreed that it would be fun, but wanted to know what they would be doing at the party.? Since I really didn't know, I just told him that everyone was bringing one special Valentine to be part of an exchange and there would be snacks.? He's always up for any event where snacks are served.? We talked about what he would need in order to make a special Valentine, and that was that.?

Until I screwed up.

A few days later I said, "Little M., I brought home some of the craft supplies you'll need to make your Valentine for the tea party."

DAMMIT!? I forgot to leave out the word "tea"!? Little M. has always, ALWAYS, had an unreasonable aversion to tea.? Hates it.? HATES IT.? I'd been doing so good, leaving out the fact that this was a "tea" party, and now I just blew it.?

"TEA PARTY?!?? I don't like tea.? I don't want to drink tea.? Did you tell V's mom that I don't like tea?? I don't want to go to a party if there is going to be tea there.? I don't like tea and I don't want to drink tea."

I tried, in vain, to reassure him that he would NOT have to drink tea at the party.? He was not to be swayed.? He did NOT like tea and he would NOT drink it and he did NOT want to go to a party if there was going to be tea there.?

Like I said, an UNREASONABLE aversion to tea.

A day later I was able to talk him down off the ledge.? "Little M., if you don't want to drink tea, no one is going to make you drink tea.? I will let V's mom know that you don't like tea.? I'm sure she'll have something besides tea to drink.? You don't want to miss out on a party with your friends just because there is going to be tea there, do you?? That would be silly.? We go to Aunt L.'s house every 4th of July for a fish fry even though we don't eat fish, don't we?? We still have a good time and there's always plenty of other things for us to eat.? Just forget about the tea and think about how nice it'll be to spend an afternoon with your friends."

He agreed and started coloring some hearts that I'd printed for him to glue onto his Valentine for the party.?

The next day I was hanging some recently washed coffee mugs on our pegs...

And I made another mistake, though my intentions were honorable.? Little M. was approaching meltdown mode over a homework paper, so in an attempt to distract him I said, "Hey, Little M., come here and choose which cup you're going to take to the tea party on Saturday."?

He gave me a "look".? He reminded me that he does NOT like tea and he's NOT going to drink tea so he does NOT need to take a cup to the party.?

I told him that invitation said to bring a favorite tea cup and even if he doesn't want to drink tea he should still bring a cup because surely he'll be drinking something.? I thought he'd want to do this part, we never let him even touch our coffee mugs because he has a habit of breaking them.? I thought for sure he'd choose Big M.'s Simpson's coffee mug.?

Instead, he said, "These aren't teacups.? They're coffee mugs."

Sigh...

I explained that we don't have any actual teacups except for the one with the broken handle that the cat drinks out of, so he should just choose one of our coffee mugs.? "You could take the one with Bart Simpson on it.? Or this one is from the Krispy Kreme store.? This one has a man playing a horn on it, Dad got that one at the Jazz Museum.? What about Mom's blue one with the peace signs?"?

He stared at the mugs, deep in thought.? "The brown one.? I want to take the brown one with the words on it.? Can you get it down for me so I can read it?? Then I'll know what it says when I get to the party and I can read it to everyone."

Sigh...

What ensued was a good 20 minutes of discussion as to why this is not an appropriate mug to take to a Valentine tea party for children, with Mr. EM giggling in the background and not being the slightest bit helpful.? The discussion ended with Little M. skulking out of the room saying, "Fine.? I'll just take the stupid blue mug with the stupid peace signs on it."

And now the party has been postponed until next Saturday, so we have another week to get through before this whole ordeal is over.?

Sigh...?
