97% The Act Of Killing

All Critics (77) | Top Critics (24) | Fresh (75) | Rotten (2)

A horrifying yet mesmerizing work, "The Act of Killing" instructively meanders at times as in a Werner Herzog film.

Better characters could hardly have been invented.

What Oppenheimer is after is a parallel story, a glimpse into the minds of men who can recount mass killings and think "Those were the days."

"The Act of Killing" works on so many levels -- psychodrama, horror movie, Orwellian nightmare, Poe story -- that sifting through your reactions could take days.

I can't be more direct. "The Act of Killing" is one of the most extraordinary films you'll ever encounter, not to mention one of the craziest filmmaking concepts anywhere, and that includes the whole Bollywood thing.

There is no sense of remorse in these men for what they did to so many innocent people and that...is chilling.

Watching these crazy loons make a movie about their crimes against humanity may not be the most pleasant way to spend an evening. But you can't deny that it's utterly fascinating.

Directors Joshua Oppenheimer and Christine Cynn have created something extraordinary in The Act of Killing, the much-talked-about documentary about torture and murder during the Indonesian dictatorship of the '60s and '70s.

This riveting documentary about political mass murder in Indonesia incorporates the killers' own movie fantasies about their massacres and deepens our understanding of the fascist brain.

It's a tough watch, but it's not like anything you've ever seen.

Anwar Congo may be the scariest person you'll see on screen this year.

If director Joshua Oppenheimer occasionally loses his way in his own narrative, where this picture demands attention is in its chilling portrait of indoctrination and evil.

It's a gut-wrenching and emotionally exhausting look at impunity that resonates far beyond its obscure central conflict.

A cynically exploitative film made in the name of human rights, which it has about as much to do with as the Punked show on MTV.

Will Batman Be Older in Batman vs. Superman?

batman-vs-superman-movie

While this year?s San Diego Comic-Con was filled with plenty of moments that had the crowd going wild, no one blew the roof off the place quite like Zack Snyder when he marched out and announced that the Man of Steel sequel will in fact be a Batman vs. Superman movie.? Though the news in and of itself would have been enough to rile fans up, the announcement was made considerably more impactful when, before even uttering the word ?Batman,? Snyder brought out Man of Steel actor Harry Lennix to read an excerpt from Frank Miller?s The Dark Knight Returns.? Screaming ensued, goosebumps were felt, and hyperventilations were witnessed.

While Snyder is currently working with screenwriter David S. Goyer on the proposed Man of Steel follow-up, we know very little about how exactly The Bat will be portrayed in the superhero pic.? However, a new rumor has surfaced claiming that the studio is looking to cast an older actor in the role, playing a more experienced version of the character.? Hit the jump for more.

dark-knight-returns-coverBefore Snyder introduced the reading of that excerpt from The Dark Knight Returns at Comic-Con, the director prefaced the moment by making it clear that they weren?t going to be adapting the comic for this next film?it was just something that was going to ?help tell this story.?? However, Batman vs. Superman might share one crucial element with Miller?s graphic novel, because the folks over at Batman on Film are hearing that Warner Bros. is looking to cast an actor in his mid-40s to play a version of Batman who is ?a grizzled veteran who has been on the job for several years.?

If true, this wouldn?t be an incredibly surprising turn of events.? Christopher Nolan has been adamant that his Dark Knight Trilogy is a standalone set of films so WB can?t exactly bank on using Christian Bale?s Batman or many elements from that series, and rebooting Batman as a younger character would force us to sit through the origin story yet again (we get it, Bruce, your parents died and it was sad).? I think the smart route is to bring in an older, established Batman who can serve as a mentor to Henry Cavill?s young and very inexperienced Superman?perhaps he can teach him to cut down on the amount of collateral damage that results from his tussels?

If this rumor is indeed true, it?s likely that WB?s age range for the actor to play the new Batman is probably somewhere between the mid-30s and mid-40s.? Goyer and Snyder are currently collaborating on the story, after which Goyer will pen the screenplay, so it may be a while before we hear any firm casting news on that front.? That being said, production on Batman vs. Superman (or Superman vs. Batman?the title has yet to be decided upon) must get underway sometime next year in order to make the proposed 2015 release date, so expect movement to progress quickly.? If Warner Bros. is really looking for an older actor to take on the Batman character, in my mind there?s only one real man for this job: Jon Hamm.

What say you, dear readers?? If WB is casting an actor in his mid-30s to mid-40s, who do you think should play Batman opposite Henry Cavill?s Superman?

2013 Fantasy Football: WR PPR Rankings (1-10)

1. Calvin Johnson, Detroit Lions
Outlook: Many attribute Johnson?s 2012 campaign to his NFL-record 1,964 receiving yards, but from a PPR perspective, his 122 receptions were just as valuable. His projected receptions for ?13 do come in lower that last year?s, but he also scored only five touchdowns in ?12. That number will dramatically rise this season.

Projections: 99 receptions, 1,606 total yards (14 rushing), 11 touchdowns, & 1 fumble

2. Eric Decker, Denver Broncos
Outlook: Regarding Denver?s receivers, much of fantasy football?s focus is on Demaryius Thomas and Wes Welker. However, Decker will be the one to emerge as a bona fide fantasy stud in ?13. He caught 85 passes last season, including 29 over the final four regular-season games. His ability to find the end zone (21 touchdowns the last two years) and strong rapport with Peyton Manning is just icing on the cake.

Projections: 96 receptions, 1,276 receiving yards, & 12 touchdowns

3. Brandon Marshall, Chicago Bears
Outlook: Marshall has 100-plus receptions in nearly each season with Jay Cutler as his starting quarterback. The lone exception being ?06, when both were rookies and Marshall wasn?t a featured player in Denver?s offense.

Projections: 105 receptions, 1,370 total yards (10 rushing), 9 touchdowns, & 1 fumble

4. A.J. Green, Cincinnati Bengals
Outlook: One of Cincinnati?s major weaknesses is their inability to find a complimentary receiver opposite of Green. The AFC?s equivalency to Johnson?s importance in Detroit?s offense is Green in Cincinnati?s offense.

Projections: 106 receptions, 1,189 receiving yards, 11 touchdowns, & 2 fumbles

5. Victor Cruz, N.Y. Giants
Outlook: Those worrying about Cruz?s contract situation should breathe a sigh of relief, as in early July, he agreed to a long-term contract extension. With no distractions, Cruz is a good bet to lead the Giants in receiving.

Projections: 89 receptions, 1,395 total yards (2 rushing), 10 touchdowns, & 1 fumble

6. Roddy White, Atlanta Falcons
Outlook: While Julio Jones has an edge in standard leagues, White gets the nod under PPR rules. He has 90 or more catches in each of the last three seasons, including 115 in 2010 and 100 in 2011.Randall Cobb

Projections: 97 receptions, 1,345 receiving yards, & 8 touchdowns

7. Randall Cobb, Green Bay Packers
Outlook: Last season Cobb led Green Bay in receptions, despite not taking on a large role until an injury sidelined Greg Jennings. With Jennings now donning Viking colors, nothing will prevent Green Bay from making Cobb the featured skill player in their offense.

Projections: 86 receptions, 1,238 total yards (165 rushing), 10 touchdowns, & 1 fumble

8. Julio Jones, Atlanta Falcons
Outlook: Jones is a big-play receiver, but he finished behind White and Tony Gonzalez in receptions last season.

Projections: 73 receptions, 1,236 total yards (74 rushing), 12 touchdowns, & 1 fumble

9. Vincent Jackson, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Outlook: Jackson set career highs in receptions (72) and receiving yards (1,384) in 2012. He enters ?13 as one of fantasy?s lesser-known No. 1 receivers.

Projections: 74 receptions, 1,402 total yards (26 rushing), & 8 touchdowns

10. Dez Bryant, Dallas Cowboys
Outlook: The 2012 campaign was a breakout one for Bryant, who silenced critics with 1,382 yards and 12 touchdowns. He?ll only get better, as he finally realizes his full potential.

Projections: 74 receptions, 1,256 total yards (7 rushing), 11 touchdowns, & 2 fumbles

Scoring Key
1 point per reception
1 point per 10 yards receiving
1 point per 10 yards rushing
6 points per touchdown
-2 points per fumble

Temperature alters population dynamics of common plant pests

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Temperature-driven changes alter outbreak patterns of tea tortrix -- an insect pest -- and may shed light on how temperature influences whether insects emerge as cohesive cohorts or continuously, according to an international team of researchers. These findings have implications for both pest control and how climate change may alter infestations.

How Much Should I Have Saved In My IRA At Various Ages ...

Pool overlooking the ocean. Retirement villa. The IRA is a pre-tax retirement vehicle available to most people who work for an employer and make less than $69,000 a year. If your modified adjusted gross income is $59,000 or less and you do have a retirement plan offered at work, you can take the full deduction of currently $5,500. If you are married, you get to contribute the full pre-tax IRA contribution if your AGI is under $95,000. Deductions are gradually phased out once you reach incomes of $69,000 for individuals and $115,000 for married couples.

If you do not have a retirement plan offered at work (rarer case), the rules are a little different. There is no income limit for individuals, and a full deduction of up to $178,000 in joint income, partial deduction from $178,000-$188,000, and no deduction if joint income is above $188,000. The best thing you can do is ask your benefits department to see if you qualify because the laws are changing all the time.

From 1974 until 1980, the IRA contribution limit for investors was $1500. From 1981 until 2001 the contribution limit improved to $2000. In 2002 the limit was raised to $3,000, again to $4000 in 2005, one more time to $5,000 in 2008 and now to $5,500 in 2013. I don?t know about you, but such low limits are hardly anything to get excited about.

When I graduated from college in 1999, my base income was $40,000 living in NYC. I was considering contributing to an IRA until I learned more about the contribution restrictions. Adding $2,000 to my IRA at the time felt stupid when I was busy trying to max out my 401(k) which had a more reasonable contribution limit of $10,000. Besides, I didn?t want to not be able to contribute pre-tax money to an IRA the very next year just in case I made more than their arbitrarily low income limit.

You?ll discover in this article that even small contributions add up over time. So don?t be stupid like me and not contribute while you still have the opportunity. Make deferring taxes a key tenet in your efforts to achieve financial independence. Taxes are our biggest expense and you want to save more than the government taketh away!

THE CURRENT AVERAGE EXISTING IRA BALANCE

According to Fidelity, one of the largest administrators of retirement plans in America with ~ 7 million accounts, the average IRA balance ? including both traditional IRAs and Roth IRAs ? stood at $81,100 at the end of 2012, up 53% from 2008 when balances hit their lowest point since the market meltdown. We can comfortably assume the balances are even higher in 2013 thanks to a 15%+ rise in the markets to date.

The $81,100 figure is somewhat meaningless if we don?t take age into consideration. If you only have $81,100 in your IRA as a 60 year old, you better have a hefty 401(k) portfolio to aide in your impending retirement. If you?ve got $81,100 in your IRA as a 30 year old, then you?re doing fine considering the contribution limits. We should understand that the average American age is in the mid-30s, which provides better context to the $81,100 figure.

This post will attempt to address what people SHOULD have in their IRA if they want to have a shot at a financially sound retirement by the traditional age of 60. Before we look at the chart, let?s make some assumptions.

The assumptions for the below chart are as follows:

* You realize the only person most capable of taking care of your financial future is yourself. You do not depend on the government, a boyfriend, a girlfriend, a spouse, or parents to fund your retirement.

* You make less than $69,000 as an individual and $115,000 as a married person with an employer sponsored retirement plan or make less than $178,000 as a married couple with no employer retirement plan.

* You begin maxing out your IRA after your first full year of work. Most high school, associates degree, or college graduates find jobs during the summer. The six month window between summer and the new year is often a time of discovery and confusion. It takes a while to figure out one?s steady state budget before making retirement decisions unless you?ve been an avid reader of personal finance publications well before work.

* You realize the IRA is a woefully light pre-tax retirement vehicle that must be accompanied by 401(k) savings or after tax savings. As a result, there are no excuses to not max out your IRA contributions by the time you?ve had three years of experience under your belt, or by the time you turn 25.

* Your IRA portfolio returns anywhere between 3% up to 15% depending on the year with an average of around 6%. Better to be conservative and end up with too much, than too little.

* Upward and downward adjusts are made to account for bull markets and market meltdowns.

* Contribution limits are raised by $500 every five years.

* You focus on maxing out your IRA instead of a ROTH IRA because you are against giving more money to the government given how wasteful they are, and you realize your income in retirement will be less than your income while working.

* You are not a knucklehead who consistently spends more than s/he makes. Just by searching this topic, you are taking ownership of your retirement and are thinking ahead with an action plan.

IRA BALANCES BY AGE GUIDE FOR THOSE STARTING NOW

IRA Balance By Age Chart

The above chart is forward looking based on existing IRA contribution amounts. For those entering the work force today, in 38 years you will conservatively have anywhere between $350,000 to $1,062,500 depend on market conditions.

?IRA BALANCE BY AGE BASED ON PAST LIMITS

Historical IRA Balance By Age Chart

The above chart takes into consideration historical lower level IRA contribution limits starting from 1981 until the year 2019. 1981 is chosen because that was the beginning of the IRA program. The chart rewinds back in time what if you started working the day the system began up until age 60.

Readers are free to select the chart that is most appropriate for them, or even select an amount based on age from each chart and average the two to get a hybrid figure. Finally, the chart is for individuals, so feel free to double them up if you qualify and are married.

CONCLUSION ? SAVINGS ADDS UP!

We should be pleasantly surprised to see how much contributing even $2,000 a year in savings adds up over time. Compounding is a wonderful thing and the key is to get to that magical inflection point where the returns from your portfolio start making more than your contributions. With a current maximum IRA contribution limit of $5,500, a $100,000 IRA portfolio returning just 6% will start overtaking your contributions. Each year will be like a 2-for-1 special to get the snowball growing. Build your financial nut so your money really starts working for you!

The current average IRA balance of $81,100 is the anchor by which my calculations are based for both charts . The key is to keep on saving so long as your paycheck comes in instead of use every excuse under the sun to stop. You can read my recommendation for the proper asset allocation between stocks and bonds by age. It?s important to be diversified and more conservative the closer you get to retirement. I?ve taken into consideration lower returns post 50 in the first chart due to lower risk portfolio investments.

Due to income limitations for contribution, it will be difficult to continuously max out your IRA of $5,500 along with $17,500 for a 401k based on a $59,000 single salary, or $95,000 married combined salary if you have an employer sponsored retirement plan. That said, it can be done if you really want to be disciplined. Please take a look at the average 401(k) by age chart to see what type of financial power you can really amass if you stay the course. Whatever you do, at least max out one throughout the entire course of your career.

The final step is to stay on top of your investments and run your IRA or 401(k) portfolio through a free portfolio fee analyzer here. My 401(k), which is now a rollover IRA was costing me $1,700+ in annual portfolio fees I had no idea I was paying. Once you?ve laid out the roadmap to retirement, the journey becomes that much easier.

Note: As asked in the comments section, for those who are looking for a good traditional IRA provider because your employer doesn?t have a sponsored retirement program, I?ve been using E*TRADE for over 10 years. They are cheap, have no minimums, easy to use, and have a huge selection of investment options.

Readers, how is your IRA doing? Are you able to contribute to both an IR and to a 401(k)? What do you think about the assumptions and figures in the chart? Are you surprised about how much one can accumulate over a 38 year career?

Google, Level 3 land Starbucks deal to boost Wi-Fi speeds

Denver -- Tech giant Google and Colorado-based Level 3 Communications are replacing AT&T as the Internet service and network provider for Starbucks.

A multiyear deal, announced Wednesday, is intended to bolster speeds for the coffee chain's free Wi-Fi service by up to 10 times.

Level 3 will begin upgrading the network and related equipment in August. More than 7,000 Starbucks-owned stores will receive the higher speeds within 18 months.

"I would characterize it as more than an upgrade of what exists today because these stores are going to be completely refitted with a series of equipment and connectivity," Level 3 chief marketing officer Anthony Christie said in an interview Tuesday.

The faster speeds will be comparable to 4G LTE mobile broadband service, which averages from 5 megabits per second to 10 Mbps. The Wi-Fi service will feature Google's branding, and Level 3 will manage in-store connectivity.

Financial terms of the contract weren't disclosed.

Based on industry pricing, the deal could be worth $50 million a year for Level 3, according to estimates from D.A. Davidson & Co. telecom analyst Donna Jaegers.

"It could be big numbers," she said.

Because the company serves business clients, reaching retail consumers isn't as important for Level 3 as it is for Google. But Jaegers said with many Starbucks stores located in corporate office buildings, the deal will position Level 3 as the anchor network, allowing the company to potentially reach additional clients.

"The ability to upsell and cross-sell into a particular geographic location is core to our marketing strategy," Christie said, adding that the Starbucks contract stands on its own merits. "This is a prominent household brand that takes customer experience and everything having to do with that brand very seriously."

Starbucks and Google are also co-developing a Starbucks Digital Network.

"Every day, our customers rely on the free Wi-Fi at Starbucks to study, work, connect with friends or just relax," Starbucks chief digital officer Adam Brotman said in a statement. "We want to make sure that they can access the Web effortlessly and quickly no matter what they're doing or what device they are using."

Abandoned college student describes how he 'screamed' for four days before he was found

Daniel Chong said he drank his own urine to stay alive, hallucinated that agents were trying to poison him with gases through the vents, and tried to carve a farewell message to his mother in his arm.

Chong was taken into custody during a drug raid and placed in the cell in April 2012 by a police officer authorised to perform Drug Enforcement Administration work. The officer told Chong he would not be charged and said, "'Hang tight, we'll come get you in a minute,'" Mr Iredale said.

"I didn't just sit there quietly. I was kicking the door yelling. I even put some shoestrings, shoelaces through the crack of the door for visual signs. I didn't stay still, no, I was screaming," said Mr Chong.

It remained unclear how the situation occurred, and no one has been disciplined, said Eugene Iredale, an attorney for Chong, The Justice Department's inspector general is investigating.

"We hope that at some point there can be at least the individual attribution of responsibility for what happened and some kind of appropriate administrative sanction if nothing more than to rebuke the suggestion that when you put someone in a holding cell without food or water, you should let them out before five days at best," said Mr Iredale.

Mr Chong, now an economics student at the University of California, San Diego, said he planned to buy his parents a house.

Understanding the effects of genes on human traits

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Recent technological developments in genomics have revealed a large number of genetic influences on common complex diseases, such as diabetes, asthma, cancer or schizophrenia. However, discovering a genetic variant predisposing to a disease is only a first step. Scientists now propose a novel approach for scanning the entire genome that will help us understand the effect of genes on human traits.
