MacBook Pro Retina Display Teardown Reveals The Changes Apple Made To Make It So Thin

Apple mentioned during its unveiling of the MacBook Pro last week that it has made some substantial changes to the construction of the notebook?s display to help make it super thin. Unlike existing MacBooks, the new Pro does away with a cover glass and case to measure just 1.5mm thin, essentially making the entire display just an LCD panel.

Following their teardown of the device last week, iFixit has taken their screwdrivers to the new MacBook Pro?s display to see exactly how Apple?s changes have made the screen so thin. ?Apple did not design and build a 1.5 mm thin LCD panel,? iFixit says. Instead, they did ?something exceptional with the design of this display.?

Instead of constructing the new display out of an LCD panel sandwiched between a case and a cover glass ? like most MacBook displays ? Apple has instead used the MacBook Pro?s aluminum casing as the frame itself. Furthermore, it has done away with a cover glass altogether, leaving the LCD panel exposed as the frontmost piece of glass.

Whether or not this means the display is slightly weaker and that it?s more prone to damage will become clearer over time ? probably as users begin to drop the device. But of course, Apple must be fairly confident about its strength.

Fed meets as many await possible help for economy

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Federal Reserve is meeting this week at a time of high alert ? over the slumping U.S. economy, the aftermath of the Greek elections and the shaky financial markets.

Whether that means it will announce any new action when its two-day meeting ends Wednesday isn't certain. But many analysts think the struggles of the U.S. economy and the threats from Europe will compel the Fed to say or unveil something to try to boost confidence.

A major issue is Europe's debt crisis. Do Fed officials think the Greek election results will help steady Europe's economy because Greece now seems likely to remain in the euro currency union? Or do they worry that Europe's crisis remains unresolved and could tip the global economy into recession?

Those concerns have flared just as U.S. employers have reduced hiring. U.S. retail sales and manufacturing output have weakened. The housing market is still far from healthy. Investors are edgy.

Many economists say that if the Fed announces any new step this week, the most likely would be to extend a program called Operation Twist, which is set to expire in two weeks.

Under Operation Twist, the Fed sells shorter-term securities and buys longer-term bonds. The goal is to further reduce long-term interest rates to encourage borrowing and spending.

Some analysts think the Fed's policymakers might want to further assess the economic landscape before intervening. But even if the Fed decides against unveiling any new steps this week, it's expected to at least make clear it's willing to do more.

"I think Fed officials will send a pretty decisive signal that they are prepared to provide more support to boost economic growth and lower unemployment," said Brian Bethune, economics professor at Gordon College in Massachusetts.

If the Fed does unveil new action Wednesday, it might take a bolder step than Operation Twist. It might decide to expand its portfolio of securities through a third round of long-term bond purchases. If it did so, some analysts think the Fed would decide to buy mortgage securities as well as Treasury bonds to try to lower record-low mortgage rates even further to help revive the housing market.

Bethune thinks the Fed will wait until its next meeting at the end of July and that it will announce a third round of bond buying then. Delaying action now would give Chairman Ben Bernanke more time to build support within the Fed.

A less dramatic step would be for the Fed to extend the target date when it expects to begin raising short-term rates beyond its timetable of late-2014.

Yet it's unclear whether any Fed action would help the economy much. Long-term U.S. interest rates have already touched record lows. Businesses and consumers who aren't borrowing now might not be moved to do so if rates slipped a bit more.

And Republican opponents of President Barack Obama would be critical of a Fed move less than five months before U.S. elections because it could be perceived as helping Obama win re-election.

Any new action would be announced in a statement the Fed will issue after its meeting. Later Wednesday afternoon, it will publish updated economic forecasts, and Bernanke will hold his quarterly news conference.

One reason many analysts think the Fed may announce new action this week is that inflation is low. A gauge of U.S. consumer prices fell in May by the most in nearly four years. When price increases slow, Fed officials generally become less concerned that super-low interest rates might ignite inflation.

Others caution that a step such as Operation Twist might offer little benefit, and not only because rates are already at historic lows. The Fed is running out of short-term Treasurys to swap for longer-term bonds.

Still, some analysts, like Diane Swonk, chief economist at Mesirow Financial, expect the Fed to announce an extension of Operation Twist for several more months. The program has been in place since September.

Extending Operation Twist could represent a compromise between Fed officials who favor expanding the Fed's portfolio through a third round of bond buying and those who say it's done enough and that further action could feed high inflation later.

Four members of the policy committee ? Vice Chairman Janet Yellen, Atlanta regional bank president Dennis Lockhart, San Francisco regional bank president John Williams and Chicago regional bank president Charles Evans ? signaled earlier this month that they'd consider backing further Fed action.

Other committee members ? such as Dallas regional bank president Richard Fisher and Jeffrey Lacker, head of the Richmond Fed ? have raised concerns about inflation. Complicating matters, the Fed will have two new members joining the debate at this week's meeting. Their views on interest-rate policies aren't known.

The two ? Jeremy Stein, a Harvard economics professor, and Jerome Powell, a former private equity executive ? won Senate confirmation in May. Their arrival brings the seven-member board to full strength for the first time in six years.

Many investors favor another round of bond buying because they think it might lift the stock market as more investors shift money out of low-yielding bonds into stocks. They were disappointed by a recent congressional appearance by Bernanke, who sent no clear signal of the Fed's next move.

The Fed chief spoke after the government issued a dismal jobs report for May. Bernanke said Fed officials need to see whether the economy can expand enough in coming months to accelerate hiring. In light of his comments, some economists say that unless the Fed thinks that turbulence in Europe compels it to act now, it may announce no action this week.

"I think the Fed will be in a wait-and-watch posture," said David Jones, chief economist at DMJ Advisors. "I think the odds still favor a third round of bond buying, but the June meeting will be too soon for the Fed to make that decision."

That reasoning relates, in part, to the sharp drop in gas prices this spring. Retail gasoline is averaging $3.51 a gallon nationally ? 43 cents below the year's peak in early April. Those lower prices give consumers more money to spend and could help revive growth in the second half of the year.

And while Europe's turmoil carries risks for the U.S. economy, it's also helped reduce the cost of U.S. mortgages and other loans. That's because investors seeking safety have poured money into U.S. Treasurys, driving down their rates, which filter through the economy.

Romney looks to Midwest's working class for gains

(AP) ? Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney is pushing to win a band of Midwestern states that voted for President Barack Obama four years ago and that generally have a long history of backing Democrats in White House elections.

Romney faces hurdles and advantages in each state but his approach will leave Obama no choice but to spend time and money defending states he carried in 2008. That Romney is even making a making a play for the arc of states from Pennsylvania to Iowa also suggests his path to the 270 electoral votes he will need to win the White House may be widening.

"It's sending a pretty clear message that the places the Democrats have taken for granted, they can't take for granted this time," said Rich Beeson, Romney's political director.

Before arriving in Iowa on Monday, Romney stopped in Janesville, Wis., an economically struggling, one-time manufacturing hub in the southern part of the state. Unemployment there is 9 percent, well above the state average of 6.8 percent for May. The national average is 8.2 percent.

He toured Monterey Mills, a unionized company that makes fabric for paint rollers and the stuffing for toys like Winnie the Pooh.

"The people of this country are having a hard time. These are challenging times for Americans, and because of his failed record his campaign is having a hard time deciding what to talk about," Romney said, the excited crowd sitting amid packages of fabric the company uses to make its paint rollers.

Wisconsin, which has not backed a Republican for president since Ronald Reagan in 1984, presents a new opportunity for Romney, almost exclusively due to Gov. Scott Walker's triumph two weeks ago in a contentious recall election. Walker's win, after an 18-month fight over public employee union rights, gives Republicans hope. It also gives Romney a corps of well-trained organizers and reams of voter data to put to use.

But he still has his work cut out for him. Voters said in exit polls after the June 5 election that they trust Obama more to address the nation's economic struggles ? the chief argument for Romney, a former businessman ? and the interests of the middle class.

Obama also continues to have the advantage in urban areas, especially among minority voters, which each state except Iowa has.

"Philadelphia is a gigantic amount of the vote," said Tad Devine, a top aide to Democratic presidential nominees in 2000 and 2004. "Pennsylvania is one of those places that may stay competitive longer, but it's going to be really hard for Romney to put together Pennsylvania if Philly turns out the way it can turn out."

Iowa, however, has trended Republican since Obama won it in 2008. Like nearly every state in the arc, Iowans turned down Democratic candidates for governor in favor of pro-business Republicans. Iowa voters dumped three state Supreme Court justices to protest their decision allowing gay marriage. Romney's campaign also spent the year before the state's leadoff nominating caucuses laying the foundation in this true swing state for a general election campaign. Iowa has voted Republican in every other presidential election since 1988.

Obama, meanwhile, enjoys a special Iowa connection, having won the 2008 Democratic caucuses in Cinderella fashion. He's already built a robust ground operation. He has spent nearly $5 million on advertising in Iowa, and has spent no money in Wisconsin since early in the year.

Although Romney aides say there is no Midwestern lynchpin, they argue that a competitive streak in Wisconsin is good for them in the entire region.

On Monday, he followed in the footsteps of Republican George W. Bush, who campaigned hard for re-election in Iowa in part by seeking to connect with working-class voters along the Mississippi River who haven't warmed to Obama.

Romney headed south along the Mississippi to Davenport, Iowa, aboard the Spirit of Dubuque, and into the heart of the region where Bush worked to trim Democratic margins in his 2004 re-election and narrow win in Iowa. The trip was part of a five-day bus tour that is taking Romney across six states: New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Wisconsin, Iowa and, on Tuesday, Michigan.

"There's a reason he's in eastern Iowa," said Ben Lange, a Republican challenging Democratic Iowa Rep. Bruce Braley. Lange appeared with Romney on the boat in Dubuque.

Obama lost white, non-college-educated voters to Republican John McCain in 2008, according to exit polls. These voters made up nearly half of all Midwestern voters, more than any other region. Obama had support from 46 percent of these voters in the Midwest, compared to McCain's 52 percent. Nationally, the group split 40 percent for Obama, 48 percent for McCain.

Recent polling by Associated Press-GfK suggests Obama is underperforming his 2008 showing in this group. In a May survey, just 31 percent of white non-college-educated adults in the Midwest said they backed Obama, compared with 57 percent who said they supported Romney. The May poll showed Obama faring better nationally, but still trailing Romney 38 percent to 53 percent.

Democrats argued that the president's support, for instance, for the 2009 auto industry bailout, which Romney opposed, demonstrates better understanding for working-class voters.

"President Obama will win in the upper Midwest because he stands for the basic Midwestern values of hard work, fair play and a level playing field," said R.T. Rybak, vice chairman of the Democratic National Committee.

The population in Democratic-controlled Detroit has fallen sharply, by 25 percent in the last decade, and Detroit's Democratic voter turnout operation has also eroded some due to political struggles of the party-controlled mayor's and Wayne County executive's offices. The problems "really put a strain on the Democratic infrastructure," said Stu Sandler, former Michigan Republican Party executive director.

Romney is sure to face continued criticism by Obama and his allies for opposing the automotive industry bailout, which the president credits with saving Detroit and buoying car-related manufacturing in nearby Ohio.

In Pennsylvania, Romney toured Weatherly Casting and Machine Co., a century-old foundry marked by rusted steel beams staffed by union workers.

Turnout in these small manufacturing towns will decide how competitive Romney will be against Obama in Pennsylvania. But even Democrats acknowledge the fight might be tougher than it appears, considering no Republican has won here since 1984.

"It's going to be a close race in Pennsylvania," said former Rep. Patrick Murphy, a Democrat from suburban Philadelphia.

Romney took a different tack in Ohio, which is dominated by large regional metro areas more so than the other states on the tour.

Instead of focusing just on small towns and cities, Romney's Ohio leg of the tour took him to areas just outside major metro areas of Cleveland and Columbus.

"Because they have so many big cities, they have so many suburbs," and fewer working-class voters, said Katie Gage, Romney's deputy campaign manager.

How To Invest When You Are Scared of The Stock Market

There are many stories about the younger generation being scared to invest in the stock market because they started to invest at the peak of the market back in 2007 and lost almost everything. The news is that they are still saving for retirement, they are just not investing that money in the market.

I wrote that is was important for them to invest in the market because bank accounts and certificates of deposit will not grow enough to provide the return they need to afford retirement. After thinking more about this, I have come up with a more developed plan of attack. This plan works for anyone just graduating college and beginning to invest.

The Plan

When you first start out, invest the majority of your money in bonds. I would suggest a mix of 80% bonds and 20% stocks. As you are investing, you will see how the market works. You will realize that the media hypes the doom and gloom as well as the exuberant. You will need to learn to tune these out.

Additionally, you will need to learn about investing. I am not saying you need to get your MBA or get a second degree in finance. Rather, learn the basics of investing. There are some great books that are very easy to read. You can see my recommendations in my Bookstore.

As you learn about the markets, you will become more comfortable with how it works. Each year after you start investing, you should change your allocation 5-10%. You can see what I suggest in the box below.

Eventually, you will get to and keep your allocation somewhere between 60-80% stocks and 20-40% bonds. This mix will allow you to earn a return so that you will have enough for retirement (assuming you save) while keeping an eye on risk.

Some readers may question my logic here and say that you are giving up years at the start when you should be 100% in stocks. While I agree that most investors should start out 100% in stocks, some people are risk adverse, meaning they don?t like the risk. This plan allows them to get comfortable with investing and still grow their portfolio. Much of the fear comes from a lack of understanding. Once you learn more about how the market operates, you will become more comfortable with it and be willing to take on more risk through a calculated approach.

Also, when you first start out investing, you have very little money. Delaying the growth of a few thousand dollars for three years won?t be the deciding factor if you cannot afford to retire or not. Using the return of the S&P 500 Index and the Barclays Bond Index for the past 40 years shows the 100% stock portfolio would be worth just over $1.1 million (assuming a $5,000 annual investment for 40 years). A portfolio of 40% stocks, 60% bonds for three years, then switching to a 60% stock, 40% bond allocation would be worth about $1 million, a difference of $150,000.

In all, the ?cost? of $150,000 for the peace of mind of knowing you will be able to afford to retire is well worth it.

Billionaire pledges 90,000 acres for protected area

National Park Service

The Sangre de Cristo Mountains, seen here from the Great Sand Dunes National Park, are the backbone of a proposed conservation area announced Friday with a billionaire's pledge to protect 90,000 acres from development.

By Miguel Llanos, msnbc.com

A billionaire hedge-fund manager on Friday pledged to protect 90,000 acres of his Colorado ranch from further development as part of a much larger planned conservation area. The Obama administration said it would be the "largest single conservation easement" ever provided to the federal government.?

The easement, which would include?tax benefits for New York-based Louis Bacon, provides "the foundation for the proposed new Sangre de Cristo Conservation Area," the Interior Department announced.

Should the conservation area happen, Bacon said Friday, "I will place approximately 90,000 currently unprotected acres of the Blanca portion of Trinchera Ranch into a conservation easement."

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, who grew up in the area and announced the deal with Bacon at his side, said the ranch "is in one of the most beautiful places in the country" -- and home to three peaks above 14,000 feet that are in the center of the longest U.S. mountain chain.?

Conserving the land will protect the region's water and wildlife, Salazar told reporters. The region is used as a corridor by bison, cougars, black bears, bighorn sheep, elk and deer, and borders the Great Sand Dunes National Park.

The proposed conservation area -- which would be much larger than Bacon's ranch -- "remains largely unchanged and is a place where wildlife can migrate between the high prairies of eastern New Mexico and the high mountain valleys of central Colorado," an Interior team that scouted the area last year reported.

Department of Interior

The circled area of interest represents the 3,000,000 acres studied by the Interior Department for the Sangre de Cristo Conservation Area.

"Maintaining such an open corridor is important for species survival and overall ecosystem health," the team added. "There are few other places in the southwestern United States where such an open and unchanged landscape exists."

Bacon, ranked by Forbes as the 312th richest American with a $1.4 billion estimated net worth, bought the 172,000-acre Trinchera Ranch from the family of billionaire Malcolm Forbes in 2007 for $175 million -- which media reports at the time called the most expensive single property ever sold in the U.S.

The Forbes family had earlier placed more than 80,000 acres of the ranch in a conservation easement.

Easements allow continued ranching and hunting but no construction of significant structures. They also provide tax incentives to property owners.

"The conservation incentives are incredibly efficient ways of conserving land,"?Greg Yankee, policy director for the Colorado Coalition of Land Trusts, told msnbc.com.

Colorado grants a maximum $375,000 tax credit for any easement, he added, and?a property owner who meets all the criteria could also list the easement as a federal income tax deduction.

The Interior Department did not immediately respond to a request for how much Bacon could expect.?

Billionaire Ted Turner, founder of CNN, owns the largest parcel inside the proposed conservation area -- the 600,000-acre Vermejo Ranch.

Salazar told the Denver Post that while he's had conversations with Turner, there were no specific proposals in the works.

"It'll happen over the next several years," Salazar said of the larger conservation area.?"It's important that, as the conservation efforts move forward, that it be done with full cognizance of the need to honor water rights and property rights on the valley floor."

(AP) ? A jury dominated by people with Penn State loyalties was selected Wednesday to decide Jerry Sandusky's fate in the child sexual abuse scandal that rocked the university and led to football coach Joe Paterno's downfall.

The seven women and five men who will hear opening statements on Monday include an engineering administrative assistant at Penn State, a dance teacher in the continuing education program and a professor who has been on the faculty for 24 years.

Also: a Penn State senior, a retired soil sciences professor with 37 years at the university, a man with bachelor's and master's degrees from the school and a woman who has been a season ticketholder since the 1970s.

Sandusky, a 68-year-old former assistant football coach, is charged with sexually abusing 10 boys over a 15-year span.

Picking the jury took less than two days, moving along more swiftly than some had expected, given that the rural area is rich with Penn State employees, alumni and fans, many of whom have strong opinions about the case. Bellefonte is 12 miles from Penn State's main campus in State College.

The judge, however, said Penn State connections would not automatically disqualify potential jurors as long as they could pledge to be impartial. Eight of the 12 jurors and two of the four alternates have ties to Penn State.

Some legal experts said jurors with Penn State connections might be inclined to come down hard on Sandusky, blaming him for Paterno's firing and the damage to the school's reputation. Or they might take their frustrations out on prosecutors for bringing the case in the first place.

St. Vincent College law professor Bruce Antkowiak said the Penn State factor could cut both ways.

"In one sense, you worry about, this guy was for many years of his life a hero of that community, an idol," Antkowiak said, referring to Sandusky's role as founder of an acclaimed charity for youngsters.

"On the other hand, there's also the consideration that there are people who believe this guy betrayed so much of what gave this institution and this area so much of the character and innocence that we love, that he has besmirched it in such a profound way."

On the list of potential witnesses, along with the young men who have accused Sandusky, are Paterno's widow and son and assistant coach Mike McQueary, who said he saw Sandusky naked in a team shower with a boy more than a decade ago and reported it to Paterno.

Paterno was fired in November for not acting more decisively against Sandusky. He died of lung cancer two months later at 85.

On Wednesday, defense attorney Joseph Amendola asked again for a delay in the trial, alleging that the judge's gag order was violated by an ABC report that said the accuser identified in court papers as Victim 4 would be the first witness. Judge John Cleland denied the request.

Amendola arrived with Sandusky at the courthouse in the morning and told reporters he was confident the nine jurors picked at that time would give them a "fair shake." Lead prosecutor Joseph McGettigan said: "So far, so good."

In court, Sandusky, who has acknowledged he showered with boys but says he never molested them, quietly leafed through a binder with plastic-covered pages. During a break, he turned to two media representatives and asked with a chuckle, "What did you guys do to deserve me?" and "How did you guys get stuck with this?"

Several prospective jurors showed up at the courthouse in clothing with Penn State logos. And the web of Penn State connections was evident when a group of 40 potential jurors was questioned Wednesday. Ten indicated they worked at the university. Nineteen indicated they or a close family member had volunteered or contributed financially to Penn State.

Fifteen said they knew someone on the prosecution's witness list, while 20 knew someone on Sandusky's defense list.

Juror No. 12 has been a professor at Penn State for more than two decades and worked on a committee with university president Graham Spanier, who was ousted in the wake of the scandal.

Jules Epstein, a criminal defense attorney and law professor at Widener University School of Law in Delaware, said the defense might try to use the Penn State-heavy jury to its advantage by calling people with strong ties to the university to vouch for Sandusky's character.

"If some of those witnesses are also respected in the Penn State community, you are subtly, softly making that link," he said.

Epstein said the defense would be wise to avoid trying to cast the trial as a vendetta against Penn State and Paterno. Jurors will probably see through that strategy, he said.

"I can see somebody saying, 'This case isn't about Penn State. This is about a bunch of youngsters whose lives were ruined,'" Epstein said.

(AP) ? Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is inviting China and Russia to "be part of the solution in Syria" but says that must include a political transition from the Assad regime.

Clinton says the transition "has to be the main focus of our diplomacy." She says violence over the last 10 days shows "peace and human dignity will not be possible in Syria without change."

Clinton spoke to reporters Tuesday in the Georgian city of Batumi, after Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin met Chinese President Hu Jintao in Beijing.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin said Tuesday the countries oppose "regime change by force." They've twice blocked the U.N. from imposing sanctions on Syria.

Clinton is meeting Wednesday in Istanbul and with U.N. mediator Kofi Annan in Washington Friday.

Online pharmacies are the current trend setter in the pharmacy world

Till the last decade, general offline pharmacies were found to deliver the necessary medical requirements for patients suffering from any kind of health issues. But, the advent of online pharmacies in the last decade has changed peoples perspective regarding the fulfillment of their medical needs and is believed to be a result of shaking hands with future technology of the internet world. Within a few years of its inception in this huge online world, internet medicine store has gone on to rule the pharmacy world with the aid of the powerful marketing tool of World Wide Web.

The positive attributes of online pharmacies that made them to lurch on popularity include the expediency and privacy of availing the required medications from your home and at your time and is much more convenient for people who are elderly, busy and in case the pharmacy is not situated within their easy accessibility distance.

Why should one be cautious and careful while buying online medicines?

Not all online pharmacies are legitimate and provide safe and effective medications.

Hence, it?s always up to the patients and consumers to check the authenticity of the online pharmacy as well as its medicines before trusting any of the internet medicine stores. More care is recommended while buying medications because it has been found that the medicines are not up to the mark with regard to its effectiveness (they are either too potent or too weak in their action) and are not prepared as per the safety standards laid down by the Medicine regulatory authority or the FDA.

Also, these medications have proven to contain health hazardous components, are mostly expired or not properly labeled or stored. The safety and precautionary measures as well as the action mechanism of the medicines are not clearly declared by the online pharmacy. Medications are taken for better health and not to deteriorate one?s health; hence do proper screening of the online pharmacy and it?s medications before trusting it.

Also, these medications have proven to contain health hazardous components thereby predisposing you to various catastrophic clinical conditions. Most of the drugs provided by these illegal internet pharmacies are either expired or within the range of expiry date. These medicines are not properly stored which ultimately makes them unfit for consumption or decrease their efficacy and also, the labels of the drugs have incomplete or misleading information regarding the action mechanism or its prescribed clinical use.

Walking and running again after spinal cord injury

ScienceDaily (May 31, 2012) ? Rats with spinal cord injuries and severe paralysis are now walking (and running) thanks to researchers at EPFL. Published in the June 1, 2012 issue of Science, the results show that a severed section of the spinal cord can make a comeback when its own innate intelligence and regenerative capacity is awakened. The study, begun five years ago at the University of Zurich, points to a profound change in our understanding of the central nervous system. According to lead author Gr?goire Courtine, it is yet unclear if similar rehabilitation techniques could work for humans, but the observed nerve growth hints at new methods for treating paralysis.

"After a couple of weeks of neurorehabilitation with a combination of a robotic harness and electrical-chemical stimulation, our rats are not only voluntarily initiating a walking gait, but they are soon sprinting, climbing up stairs and avoiding obstacles when stimulated," explains Courtine, who holds the International Paraplegic Foundation (IRP) Chair in Spinal Cord Repair at EPFL.

Waking up the spinal cord

It is well known that the brain and spinal cord can adapt and recover from moderate injury, a quality known as neuroplasticity. But until now the spinal cord expressed so little plasticity after severe injury that recovery was impossible. Courtine's research proves that, under certain conditions, plasticity and recovery can take place in these severe cases -- but only if the dormant spinal column is first woken up.

To do this, Courtine and his team injected a chemical solution of monoamine agonists into the rats. These chemicals trigger cell responses by binding to specific dopamine, adrenaline, and serotonin receptors located on the spinal neurons. This cocktail replaces neurotransmitters released by brainstem pathways in healthy subjects and acts to excite neurons and ready them to coordinate lower body movement when the time is right.

Five to 10 minutes after the injection, the scientists electrically stimulated the spinal cord with electrodes implanted in the outermost layer of the spinal canal, called the epidural space. "This localized epidural stimulation sends continuous electrical signals through nerve fibers to the chemically excited neurons that control leg movement. All that is left was to initiate that movement," explains Rubia van den Brand, contributing author to the study.

The innate intelligence of the spinal column

In 2009, Courtine already reported on restoring movement, albeit involuntary. He discovered that a stimulated rat spinal column -- physically isolated from the brain from the lesion down -- developed in a surprising way: It started taking over the task of modulating leg movement, allowing previously paralyzed animals to walk over treadmills. These experiments revealed that the movement of the treadmill created sensory feedback that initiated walking -- the innate intelligence of the spinal column took over, and walking essentially occurred without any input from the rat's actual brain. This surprised the researchers and led them to believe that only a very weak signal from the brain was needed for the animals to initiate movement of their own volition.

To test this theory, Courtine replaced the treadmill with a device that vertically supported the subjects, a mechanical harness did not facilitate forward movement and only came into play when they lost balance, giving them the impression of having a healthy and working spinal column. This encouraged the rats to will themselves toward a chocolate reward on the other end of the platform. "What they deemed willpower-based training translated into a fourfold increase in nerve fibers throughout the brain and spine -- a regrowth that proves the tremendous potential for neuroplasticity even after severe central nervous system injury," says Janine Heutschi, co-author in the study.

First human rehabilitation on the horizon

Courtine calls this regrowth "new ontogeny," a sort of duplication of an infant's growth phase. The researchers found that the newly formed fibers bypassed the original spinal lesion and allowed signals from the brain to reach the electrochemically-awakened spine. And the signal was sufficiently strong to initiate movement over ground -- without the treadmill -- meaning the rats began to walk voluntarily towards the reward, entirely supporting their own weight with their hind legs.

"This is the world-cup of neurorehabilitation," exclaims Courtine. "Our rats have become athletes when just weeks before they were completely paralyzed. I am talking about 100% recuperation of voluntary movement."

In principle, the radical reaction of the rat spinal cord to treatment offers reason to believe that people with spinal cord injury will soon have some options on the horizon. Courtine is optimistic that human, phase-two trials will begin in a year or two at Balgrist University Hospital Spinal Cord Injury Centre in Zurich, Switzerland. Meanwhile, researchers at EPFL are coordinating a nine million Euro project called NeuWalk that aims at designing a fully operative spinal neuroprosthetic system, much like the one used here with rats, for implanting into humans.

Basic Scuba Diving Gear What You Need And Why You Need It

Anyone who has spent time underwater with less than perfect scuba diving gear knows the importance of finding the right scuba diving equipment. If you are a novice scuba diver, enthralled with the underwater world, planning to buy your own scuba diving kit, you have to know what gear you need to buy and why you need to buy it. Fortunately, there are just 5-6 scuba diving products that you need to buy before you can start exploring the luminous depths on your own.

Once you get the right equipment dive masks, diving cylinders, scuba fins, snorkels, buoyancy compensator and diving wetsuits you are ready to go. But in order to get it right, you need to know the part all this equipment plays in your underwater adventure. Let's take a look at how all this scuba gear works:

Dive Masks: No matter how clear the water is, you cannot see anything clearly unless you put on a snugly-fitting diving mask. A dive mask creates air space between your eyes and the mask lens, allowing you to enjoy the splendid sights of the underwater world. Needless to say, they also save your eyes and part of your face from the stings of the salty sea water.

Diving Suits (for cold water): This is a piece of equipment you can do without if you are diving in warm waters. But scuba diving in cold water without a wetsuit (or a drysuit) is not only extremely uncomfortable, but also quite dangerous. A diving suit insulates your body from the cold waters and also provides some degree of protection from jellyfish stings and coral abrasion.

Scuba Fins: Strapping on a pair a fins allows you to explore a larger area, expend less energy and use less oxygen. Unless you are diving in warm tropical waters, it is best to choose open heel adjustable fins. Usually a majority of amateurs tend to choose fins that are too small. Compare the size of your fins to your boots and your diving suits to ensure that you've got the right size.

Snorkel: Snorkels let you breathe while your face is in the water. If the route to your special diving site requires swimming close to the surface, you can save a lot of gas in your cylinder. In case you do not like the feel of snorkel hanging about your face, you can opt for quick release snorkels.

Buoyancy Compensator Device: For newbies, attaining neutral buoyancy is a pain. Proper utilization of weights and breathing techniques will help you achieve the state of neutral buoyancy. Most scuba divers find the perfect BCDs after a lengthy process of trial and error. For beginners, it is best to go with easy to operate vest-style buoyancy compensator devices.

Diving Cylinder: You won't need this one if you are just going snorkeling, but if you plan to dive deep, this is the most important scuba diving equipment you will buy. For newbies, a standard compressed air cylinder with commonly used scuba diving breathing gas is good enough. But you can also go for Enriched Nitrox mixes if you want to stay deeper for longer periods.

All above mentioned equipment form a basic scuba diving kit. A scuba diving enthusiast needs most of them to plumb the depths of the sea. But once your confidence increases and you want to dive deeper and stay down longer, you need to buy many other scuba diving equipment and accessories to take things to the next level.

Greinke pitches Brewers to sweep of Dodgers

Associated Press Sports

updated 1:50 a.m. ET June 1, 2012

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Zack Greinke felt the Milwaukee Brewers were primed for a turnaround. Now he's hoping for an even bigger surge for his team.

Greinke pitched effectively for six innings, Aramis Ramirez and Carlos Gomez each hit a two-run homer and the Brewers beat the major league-leading Los Angeles Dodgers 6-2 on Thursday night to complete a four-game sweep.

"It was pretty impressive," Greinke said. "They're playing better than they have in a while. But we've been due for something like this for a while, so hopefully it continues. I feel like our offense is clicking and getting enough runs on the board so that we can get on a good roll if we keep pitching like we did in this series."

The Brewers won the season series 6-1 for their best record against the Dodgers since shifting from the AL to the NL in 1998. They are the first visiting team to sweep a four-game series at Chavez Ravine since August 1993.

"We played four good games. We got great pitching, great starting pitching, and we got some timely hitting," manager Ron Roenicke said. "Having four games against these guys in their ballpark, we had to play four great games to beat them. And we did. This should give us a lot of confidence. We should be headed in the right direction. When we play our game, we can compete with anybody."

The Brewers won the finale without NL MVP Ryan Braun, who was scratched because of tightness in his right Achilles tendon. He first experienced it on May 1 at San Diego, when he hurt himself sliding into second base a day after hitting three home runs against the Padres, and has been playing through it ever since.

"He should be back in there tomorrow," Roenicke said. "If he comes in tomorrow and he's stiff, then we'll change that. But he felt pretty good today and was ready to pinch-hit. So he should be ready."

The Dodgers also played without their No. 3 hitter, Matt Kemp, and will be without the slugger for at least a month. The All-Star center fielder, who was runner-up to Braun in last year's MVP voting, was placed on the 15-day disabled list after re-injuring his left hamstring Wednesday night while running the bases in his second game back from the disabled list.

"We were 9-5 without Matt the first time, so regardless of whether he was in the lineup or not, they should feel pretty good about themselves," said Tony Gwynn Jr., who will be playing center field the majority of the time that Kemp is sidelined. "They just swept a first-place team that still leads their division by five games right now. So if the show was on the other foot, I think we'd feel the same way."

Greinke (7-2) allowed a run and nine hits in his Dodger Stadium debut, striking out seven and walking one. The nine-year veteran, who surrendered seven runs and 10 hits over 2 1-3 innings in an 8-5 loss last Saturday at Arizona, allowed at least one hit in every inning he pitched and stranded eight baserunners. It was the fourth time in his last five starts that he allowed fewer than two runs.

"There were a lot of singles - same thing as the last game - but tonight I made good pitches when I needed to," Greinke said. "I threw a lot of changeups, which I hadn't done in a while. My fastball felt good and the location was good. I didn't use many curve balls and tried not to use the slider as much."

Chad Billingsley (2-4) struck out eight in six innings for Los Angeles, but yielded four runs and six hits. The right-hander is 0-4 with a 5.13 ERA over his last nine starts, a stretch that began with a no-decision at Milwaukee after he beat San Diego and Pittsburgh in his first two outings.

This is the longest winless drought of Billingsley's seven-year career. He was 0-5 with a 5.08 ERA in his final seven starts of 2009, and last season went 0-1 with a 4.78 ERA during another seven-game stretch.

The Brewers grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second inning when Rickie Weeks hit an RBI single and Taylor Green scored on a fielder's choice grounder by Martin Maldonado.

Billingsley got one of the runs back in the bottom half, driving in Jerry Hairston Jr. with a two-out single for his first RBI of the season. But Greinke minimized the damage, throwing a called third strike past A.J. Ellis with the bases loaded, and Ramirez increased Milwaukee's margin to 4-1 in the third with a two-run homer to left on an 0-2 pitch.

Billingsley retired the first two batters in the fifth before plunking Corey Hart, who was 0 for 14 lifetime against him before that plate appearance. A single by Ramirez and a walk to Green loaded the bases, but the 27-year-old from Defiance, Ohio escaped the jam by retiring Weeks on a popup.

NOTES: Ellis became the ninth different player Dodgers manager Don Mattingly has used in the second spot in the batting order this season, and the fourth in the last four games. He was 2 for 5. ... The only other road series the Brewers have won this season was their first one, when they took three of four against the Cubs. ... Milwaukee CF Nyjer Morgan is 0 for 18 with runners in scoring position. Last season he batted .313 in those situations (25 for 80) with 35 RBIs.
