UBS to slash 10,000 jobs in fixed income retreat

ZURICH (Reuters) - UBS unveiled plans on Tuesday to wind down its fixed income business and fire 10,000 bankers, as it adapts to tougher capital rules that make it more difficult for investment banks to turn a profit since the financial crisis.

Zurich-based UBS will focus on its private bank and a smaller investment bank, ditching much of the trading business that ran up $50 billion in losses in the financial crisis, as well as a $2.3 billion hit, which trader Kweku Adoboli, now on trial on charges of fraud and false accounting, is accused of running up.

Chief Executive Sergio Ermotti, a former Merrill Lynch and UniCredit banker who took over after the Adoboli affair last year, is leading the three-year overhaul, which is aimed at saving 3.4 billion Swiss francs ($3.6 billion), on top of existing spending cuts of 2 billion francs.

Former investment bank co-head Carsten Kengeter will lead the isolation and winding down of its fixed-income activities that are no longer profitable as a result of tougher capital rules on riskier business introduced after the crisis.

The remaining investment bank - equities, foreign exchange trading, corporate advice, and precious metals trading - will be run by Andrea Orcel, a recent Ermotti hire from Bank of America who had co-ran the unit with Kengeter until Tuesday.

"This decision has been hard but it is necessary to create a UBS that is fit for the future," Ermotti said. "The business model we are creating will be unique in the banking industry."

The measures translate to a 15 percent staff cut, taking UBS's overall staff to 54,000, from 63,745 now, already down from a 2007 peak of 83,500 as banks have shed tens of thousands of jobs globally since the financial crisis of 2008.

Of the job cuts, 2,000 will be front-office investment banking staff, the revenue generators. About 2,500 positions will go in Switzerland, slightly more than that in the United States, and the rest in Britain, Ermotti said.

UBS stopped dozens of fixed income traders from entering its London offices on Tuesday, a source at the bank said.

Some staff turned up to work to find their employee cards no longer worked at the turnstile and were then escorted to human resources, according to various sources with knowledge of the situation.

Once at human resources, they received their personal items in a bag with a letter saying they would have two weeks paid leave, after which they were to return to pick up their redundancy package, the sources said.

A smaller investment bank will leave UBS focused on its private bank, which looks after the affairs of the wealthy. With 1.6 trillion francs in assets, it is the second-largest operation of its kind in the world after Bank of America.

UBS shares, which soared 7.3 percent on Monday in anticipation of the announcement, were up another 5 percent at 13.79 francs by 1050 GMT in exceptionally heavy trading, their highest since July 2011, compared with a 0.7 percent rise for the European bank sector index.

UBS, which took a government bailout in 2008 after more than $50 billion in mortgage losses, is effectively admitting that an attempt to crack the fixed-income big league has failed.

Deutsche Bank said on Tuesday it hopes to benefit from the UBS cuts as its investment bank delivered record third-quarter sales and trading revenue.

But some analysts said other banks might be forced to follow suit even though the UBS strategy was risky.

"While other banks like CS are still sticking to their investment banks, which do not even earn their cost of equity, UBS takes the lead in responding adequately to investors' demands," said Sarasin analyst Rainer Skierka.

Credit Suisse said last week it was also cutting more costs to boost its profits and capital but did not announce the same kind of radical restructuring as UBS. [ID:nL5E8LP122]

INVESTMENT BANK LOSSES

After settling a damaging U.S. tax probe in 2009, UBS had just started to rebuild client confidence when the $2.3 billion trading scandal surfaced in September last year.

Adoboli, who worked on the bank's London-based exchange-traded equities funds desk, has pleaded not guilty to two counts of fraud and four of false accounting.

Ermotti's overhaul comes against a backdrop of far tougher regulation on riskier securities trading activities, and represents a return to advisory roots stemming from UBS's purchase of Warburg, a British merchant bank, in 1995.

The bank aims to pay out more than 50 percent of profits to shareholders from 2015, after paying its first post-crisis dividend last year, a modest 0.10 francs a share. It has put away funds in the third quarter for an unspecified dividend this year, financial chief Tom Naratil told journalists.

The costs related to the investment banking split will also lead to a fourth-quarter and full-year loss, when taken together with charges on the bank's own debt, UBS said.

The private bank also faces challenges, with profits falling as Swiss banking secrecy is weakened by repeated demands from foreign governments determined to recoup tax on undeclared funds held in offshore accounts.

However, the unit secured 7.7 billion francs in net new money from clients in the third quarter, which represents the highest result in a third quarter - typically a slow one for the business due to summer holidays - in five years.

UBS swung to a third-quarter net loss of 2.172 billion francs, hit by the restructuring charges and 863 million francs written off the value of its own debt. Analysts in a Reuters poll had forecast a net profit of 457 million francs.

UBS is aiming to reduce risk-weighted assets to below 200 billion francs by the end of 2017, from 301 billion currently. Of this the investment bank will account for roughly 70 billion francs, less than half of what it accounts for today.

Love hopes to be 1st black GOP woman in Congress

(AP Photo/Rick Bowmer)

(AP) ? In her bid to become the first black Republican woman elected to Congress, Mia Love is the GOP's emblem of diversity this campaign year. She's reluctant to embrace the role, saying she doesn't let race or gender define her politics.

The 36-year-old mayor of Saratoga Springs, Utah, points to her policy stances as the reason for her success.

"I was elected mayor not because of my race or gender, not because I wear high heels, but because of the policies I put in place," Love said in a recent interview.

Polling shows Love with a slight lead over Democratic Rep. Jim Matheson, a six-term incumbent. The race is still too close to call.

In a party that has struggled for decades to attract black voters, the daughter of Haitian immigrants included subtle nods to civil rights leaders Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks in her speech to the Republican National Convention in August.

"Our story has been told for over 200 years with small steps and giant leaps," she told the applauding delegates. "From a woman on a bus to a man with a dream, from the bravery of the greatest generation to the innovators and entrepreneurs of today, this is our story."

Love has made much of her family story, a hallmark of her stump speeches: Her parents legally immigrated to Brooklyn in the early 1970s, she says, with just $10 in their pockets. She says her father ? who has toiled as a painter, janitor and school bus driver ? taught her never to ask for a handout. Her parents became naturalized U.S. citizens in 1984.

A married mother of three, a Mormon and a tea party favorite, Love is the only woman among 11 black Republican House candidates in the Nov. 6 election. She and Vernon Parker, who is running in Arizona, are seen as the most likely winners among nine black GOP challengers.

Republicans, like Love herself, have focused more on her conservative values and agenda than her race.

"We need a party that is diverse based on our issues and not based on simply trying to find greater variety in the complexion," said Rep. Tim Scott of South Carolina, one of the two black Republicans now in the House.

While Love doesn't emphasize her race and gender, they are powerful factors in her bid to become a Republican member of Congress. Scott and Allen West of Florida were elected in 2010 as the first black Republicans in Congress since former Rep. J.C. Watts of Oklahoma left in 2003.

Black Republicans have long been scarce in Congress. Of 26 black Republican House members since 1870, the vast majority served during the post-Civil War Reconstruction days. Scott and West, both tea party favorites, were swept into office as part of the GOP wave in 2010. West faces a tough re-election fight.

Love is getting support in her bid to focus on policies.

It would be a disservice to Love for Republicans to tout her candidacy in racial terms, said Artur Davis, a black former Democratic congressman from Alabama who switched parties and also spoke to the GOP convention.

"As a congresswoman, she would have so much more to offer: successful former mayor, the product of a successful immigration story and a thoughtful, dynamic conservative," Davis said.

Amid the nation's shifting demographics, the GOP has focused more on reaching out to Hispanics than black voters, who have supported President Barack Obama in overwhelming numbers.

To enter the history books, Love must topple Matheson, the son of a popular former governor, in a state where more than nine in 10 people are white. For a decade, a series of white Republican men have been unable to knock off Matheson, a fiscally conservative "Blue Dog" Democrat who has beaten far more recognizable names in Utah politics.

Since the convention, Republican House Speaker John Boehner, Arizona Sen. John McCain and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice have helped Love raise money. Mitt Romney's son Josh is her campaign chairman.

Romney's English roots surprise cousins left behind

BARROW-IN-FURNESS, England (Reuters) - Mitt Romney's fight to become America's next president has the backing of one enthusiastic group of supporters, although they don't actually have a vote: his relatives in England.

Few associate the Republican candidate with Britain but it was in England's industrial northwest that his ancestors lived for generations and converted to Mormonism before leaving for the United States in 1841 in search of the promised land.

It was a bold escape for a family of lowly carpenters. By sailing for the New World they took a step that eventually brought the Romney clan to the fore of American politics.

But some of them stayed and their descendants still live along Britain's rainy western coast - a world away from the intrigue and glamour of Washington.

One is a 69-year-old English widow who discovered just a few weeks ago that she is a distant cousin of the former governor of Massachusetts.

"It's all come out of the blue," Jennie Iveson told Reuters in her modest home in Barrow-in-Furness, a shipyard town once at the heart of Britain's industrial revolution. "It's a surprise really. Quite a surprise. Big surprise."

Iveson's link to Romney came to light when her inquisitive grandson-in-law began tracing back their family history by delving into archives in their home county of Lancashire.

Records show that Iveson is Mitt Romney's fourth cousin - they share a great-great-great grandfather, George Romney, who died in 1859. And now she can't help but notice that her distant American relative does bear a striking family resemblance.

"I saw him on the telly twice the other day, last week I think. He looks a bit like my brother," said Iveson, a retired factory worker, most of whose children have no jobs.

"(My brother) looks quite like him. He had dark hair like him. It's all grey now. He (Romney) looks like our Mike. Same sort of face and everything."

She offers a shrug and a smile when asked about Romney's wealth and privileged status in the United States, where he is sometimes accused by critics of being out of touch with poor people. "I wish him luck and everything else," she said.

ONE OF THE WEALTHIEST

Romney is one of the wealthiest Americans ever to run for the White House. He has estimated his fortune at between $190 million and $250 million.

But for Romney, his faith and English roots remain a sensitive issue, partly because his Mormon religion is still regarded with suspicion by some American voters.

When he came to Britain in July this year, Romney did not visit the area where his family have their roots - unusual since emphasizing a European heritage is often seen as an electoral plus in U.S. politics.

Barack Obama, who faces Romney in the November 6 presidential election, went down well last year when he toured an Irish village where one of his forebears once lived.

Romney's campaign spokeswoman made no comment when asked how the Republican challenger felt about his English origins.

In Lancashire, the county the candidate's ancestors left behind, Romney enthusiasts offered their own explanation.

"He is Mormon and this is Mormon central," said Christopher Nelson, a local vicar with an interest in Romney's heritage. "Perhaps he would perceive (coming here) as highlighting his Mormonism more than highlighting his roots."

His known relatives in England are genealogically so far removed that many of them were not even aware of the link until recently when the U.S. election campaign began to gather pace.

Amateur genealogist Simon Nash was astonished to discover while digging into regional records that his wife Maria was Mitt Romney's fourth cousin twice removed.

Poring over archival material and photos on his laptop in his home in the industrial city of Preston, Nash said it was a matter of tracing people back to a common ancestor - a fairly easy task since most records are available publicly in Britain.

The quest has certainly made Nash, whose day job involves dressing in a duck outfit and posing as a mascot for a local football team, more interested in U.S. politics.

"If he got in, America would be a completely different place in three years time to what it is now," he said. "I don't know if it will be for the better."

Nash's wife Maria, 32, was equally astounded by his researches.

"I was very much shocked ... It still feels like ... it's not quite happening to (me)," said Maria, who is Jennie Iveson's granddaughter. "It's quite an unreal feeling."

Would she like to meet Romney in the White House? "I think it would be very surreal," she said with a shy giggle. "I would like to go there for a brew (cup of tea) if he ever got in there."

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

The village of Dalton-in-Furness, a picturesque scattering of mediaeval cottages, is where the Romney clan began. Its men are still remembered there as hard-working carpenters.

One of them was William Romney, who gained notoriety for making his own coffin and putting it on display in his workshop before he died in 1915.

"I get the impression that quite a few Romneys were carpenters. It seems to be a family trait," Jim Walton, a Dalton historian, said outside a canary-yellow cottage where William Romney used to live and work.

"Should Mitt Romney succeed and become the next president of the United States, he would be able to look around in pride and say: 'My great great granddad came from Dalton-in-Furness'. Well, I hope he can say that in pride."

Dalton has plenty of Romney-related history. Its most famous son was George Romney, who went to London and became one of the most celebrated portrait painters of the 18th century.

Two streets and a park are named after the artist, who is said to have had a secret affair with the mistress of Lord Nelson, the naval hero who defeated the French at Trafalgar.

George was buried in the churchyard of St Mary's parish church - where Mitt Romney's great-great grandparents, Elizabeth and Miles, were baptized and married before converting to the Mormon faith in 1837 and moving to the United States.

Their daughter Sarah's baptism record from the year before is still in the archives in Preston, with her father's vocation - joiner - scribbled in an old parish book.

"It's a fascinating story that Dalton holds," said Rev. Alan Mitchell, gazing over the town's skyline from the top of a church tower - a view that has changed little since Romneys lived here. Pointing at a couple of old communion cups, he added: "The Romneys could have touched these."

At the time, Lancashire was a tough, polluted and chaotic place to live, and disease and drunkenness were rife. Mormon promises of a better and more orderly life fell on fertile ground.

"It was a grimy, mucky hell on earth," said Nelson, the vicar. "Why on earth you would want to stay here, if somebody tells you there is milk and honey elsewhere? It was a horrible place."

FREE TICKET

Early Mormon missionaries offered not only salvation but a free ticket to the United States.

They also gave Miles Romney a position of authority aboard a ship called the Sheffield, making the arrangement all the more attractive for a young and ambitious man with a large family.

But many other Romneys never converted and stayed behind in England, and the relatives who live here today know little about Mormonism.

In his autobiography, Mitt Romney said the family left England for New Orleans and travelled by steamer up the Mississippi to Nauvoo, Illinois, where they joined other Mormons. Later they followed Mormons in a trek across the plains to Utah. "Romneys are, by nature, an adventurous breed," he wrote.

The Mormon fascination with the souls of their ancestors means they have one of the world's biggest family history archives. The Mormon temple near Preston still contains records detailing the lives of British Romneys.

One document, describing the state of Miles Romney's family after emigration, listed his job as a joiner and said: "In 1850 Miles had a household of ten, and a real wealth of ?200."

The area is still very much the heartland of British Mormonism. The Ribble, a local river, is known as the River Jordan of European Mormonism. This is where England's early Mormons were baptized.

A memorial near its muddy bank commemorates those early conversions. Europe's biggest Mormon temple is nearby, its spire towering high above the misty, rain-washed hills. Neatly dressed missionaries in dark suits and ties are frequent visitors.

"The missionaries that we see coming from America will have roots that originated here in England," said Bishop Michael Turner, leader of a local Mormon congregation. "It's an exciting time ... to have a candidate who is a member of the church."

But for some, Romney is an unpopular figure, particularly after he suggested during his visit this year that Britain was not ready to host the Olympic Games.

"I think Mitt Romney is rather careless in his choice of words sometimes," said Walton, the Dalton historian. "But there you are. Can't have everything, can you?"

De Loys' Ape

Louis Fran?ois Fernand Hector de Loys, (1892-1935) was a Swiss geologist and pioneer of oil field prospection in Europe, Africa and America. Unfortunately de Loys is today less known for his geological work than for a story involving a strange photography.

Fig.1. Fran?ois de Loys (1892-1935), photo taken probably before his expedition to Venezuela in 1917 (image in public domain).

In 1920 a bunch of exhausted men reached the bank of the Tarra River, a tributary of the Rio Catatumbo, located in the borderlands of Venezuela and Colombia. They were the only survivors of the ?Colon Development? ? expedition, disappeared in 1917 in the mountains of the Sierra de Perije? during geological fieldwork. The region was a dangerous jungle infested with tropical beasts of prey, parasites and diseases, inhabited only by the hostile Motilones Indians. They found no oil, but had a strange encounter with an unknown creature.

One day de Loys spotted along the shores of the Rio Tarra two large monkeys covered with reddish fur and lacking a tail. More strangely the two animals walked upright and approached slowly the expedition, visibly irritated, shouting, brandishing the arms and using they own excrements as projectiles against the frightened men. The men decided to respond to the attack and shoot in direction of the two apes, killing the female.
Since de Loys had never seen such large monkeys, he took various photos of the body and tried to preserve the skull. However the bones soon started to decay and during a trip on the river the boat capsized and most of the photos of the ape got lost.
When de Loys finally returned home he hid the only surviving photography in his private notebook. Only years later a friend, the Swiss anthropologist George Alexis Montandon (1879-1944), accidentally rediscovered this photo.

The animal in the photography showed characteristics that are not found in the monkeys of the new world, like the upright posture, the absence of a tail, but especially the extraordinary size. Montandon was fascinated by the possibility of a great ape or even primitive man still surviving in South America. Already early explorers reported strange encounters in the jungle:

?It is, however, possible that a great anthropoid ape may exist, as yet unrecognised by zoologists. On the cataracts of the upper Orinoco, Humboldt heard reports of a ?hairy man of the woods?, which was reputed to build huts, to carry off women, and to devour human flesh [...] Both Indians and missionaries firmly believe in the existence of this dreaded creature, which they call vasitri, or ?the great devil.? Humboldt suggests that the original of what he boldly calls ?the fable?, may exist in the person of ?one of those large bears, the footsteps of which resemble those of man, and which are believed in every country to attack women;? and he seems to claim credit for being the only person to doubt the existence of the great anthropomorphous monkey of America. But it might be permitted, in return, to ask what ?large bear? is known to inhabit Venezuela; and whether it is true that bears? footsteps have a signal resemblance to those of men; and that bears specially attack women.?
GOSSE, P.H. (1861): ?The Romance of Natural History.?

However the scientific description of the species ?Ameranthropoides loysi? ? de Loys? American human-like ape ? by Montandon was accepted only by the French establishment and rejected by scientists from Great Britain and North America. The eminent English naturalist Sir Arthur Keith stated that the photo showed only a species of spider monkey ? Ateles belzebuth native in the explored region- with the tail deliberately cut off or hidden in the photography.
In fact spider monkeys are typical apes found in South America; however the largest known extant species reach 110cm (3,5 feet) height standing on their hind limbs, De Loys ape was with the estimated 157cm (5 feet) height considerable larger. The only known fragmentary remains of such a large spider monkey species are those of Protopithecus brasiliensis, the ?primitive monkey of Brazil?, an extinct ape discovered by the Danish naturalist Peter W. Lund in 1838 in the Brazilian region of Bahia.

Unfortunately the size of the animal can not be compared to other objects apart a strange box on which the corpse was posed ? many published versions of the photography were also modified or the image itself has been cropped, magnifying the impression left by the ape. De Loys himself was very reluctant to promote the story behind the photo. In the official report of the expedition published in 1929 there is no mention of the creature or subsequent research and de Loys mention it only, forced by Montandon, in a sensationalistic article entitled ?Found at Last ? The First American? published in the Illustrated London News.

Fig.2. The photography of de Loys? ape ? ?Ameranthropoides loysi?, from MONTANDON 1929 (image in public domain).

In 1998 historians Pierre Centlivres and Isabelle Girod published an article suggesting that the entire story was an idea of anthropologist Montandon.
Montandon was strongly influenced by racist hypothesis of human evolution popular at the time; he proposed a polyphyletic origin of humans and considered the various human races descending from local monkey species. He affirmed that Africans evolved from gorillas and Asians from orang-utans. A missing link ? as the supposed Ameranthropoides ? was a perfect example of an evolutionary line between spider monkeys and South American Indians and would have confirmed his racist view of human evolution.

The most plausible hypothesis that emerges now is a manipulated photo of a common spider monkey of the species Ateles belzebuth, used by Montandon to promote his hypothesis of human evolution. This approach is supported by a detail in the complete view of the photo ? there are stumps of non-native, cultivated Banana Trees visible ? impossible if the encounter happened really in the middle of the unexplored jungle.

Finally in 1999 the July-August edition of the Venezuelan scientific magazine ?Interciencia? published a letter send in 1962 from Doctor Enrique Tejera to the editor Guillermo Jos? Schael of the magazine ?Diario El Universal?:

?[...] This monkey is a myth. I will tell you his story. [...]
Mister Montandon said that the monkey had no tail. That is for sure, but he forgot to mention something, it has no tail because it was cut off. I can assure you this, gentlemen, because I saw the amputation?[].
Who is speaking here in 1917 was working in a camp for oil exploration in the region of Perij?. The geologist was Fran?ois de Loys, the engineer Dr. Mart?n Tovar Lange. De Loys was a prankster and often we laughed at his jokes. One day they gave him a monkey with an ill tail, so it was amputated. Since then de Loys called him ?el hombre mono? (the monkey man).
Some time later I and Loys went in another region of Venezuela: in an area called Mene Grande. He always walked along the side of his monkey, who died some time later. De Loys decided to take a photo and I believe that Mr. Montandon will not deny it is the same photograph that he presented today. [in 1929 Montandon presented the Ameranthropoides in a public lecture].
More recently during a visit to Paris my astonishment was great visiting the Museum of Man. On top of a monumental scale, filling the back wall, there was a huge photo with the caption: ?The first anthropoid ape discovered in America.?
It was the photograph of de Loys, beautifully modified. The plants were no longer visible in the background, and it was not possible to understand on which kind of box the monkey was sitting. The trick is done so well that within a few years the monkey will be over two meters high [...].
Finally, I must warn you: Montandon was not a good person. After the war he was executed because he betrayed France, his homeland.

Sincerely, Your friend Enrique Tejera.?

If the myth of a large ape-like creature in South America has a zoological explanation (like a still undescribed monkey species), the photo of de Loys surely has nothing to do with it.
Despite his role in the prank (he contributed the photo and the story and later never resolved the case), de Loys continued his promising career in the field of exploration geology. In 1926 he engaged in the Turkish Petroleum Company, cultivating contacts with geologists and scientists all over the globe. In 1928 he became a fellow of the Geological Society of London and soon visited the Irak to study the geology and the possible oil reserves of the region. Here he encountered Syphilis, returned to the town of Lausanne in France where he died still too young, October 16, 1935.

Cosmetic Surgery Tips For Anybody Considering A Procedure ...

One of the most essential aspects of having plastic surgery, is permitting yourself to recover after the procedure is done. Make sure that you possess some days off of work and school, so you could unwind as well as recover. Look at this article for additional tips about cosmetic surgery that you should keep in mind.

When you decide that cosmetic surgery fits your needs, make sure you invest sufficient time shopping around before selecting a doctor or clinic. Unless you have a great deal of prior knowledge about the physician, it?s vital that you simply talk to several experts before deciding which is best for you.

If cosmetic surgery appears out of your budget range, you could think about getting it completed outside of the United States. Medical tourism is growing in popularity, as the expenses associated with particular procedures are sometimes half the price abroad. However be cautious with who you choose to do the operation. Seek information into the doctor?s credentials prior to signing on the bottom line.

Determine if your surgeon is actually competent. When it comes to cosmetic surgery, you want to make sure that the surgeon you are using is actually competent. Examine online evaluations. Get in touch with the medical board. In the event the doctor is actually board-certified, ask about virtually any issues. Checking the doctor out can now save you a lot of grief later on.

You need to ask your doctor what will occur if you were not satisfied with the results. If something went wrong throughout the procedure, your doctor ought to be honest on you. Inform you that you could file a claim for negligence. If your doctor is not honest on this topic, you need to go to another medical center.

Keep in mind, that it?s never too late for second thoughts when it comes to cosmetic surgery. The extensive preparation process required makes it hard for you to definitely express doubts that come up along the way. Pay attention to your inner voices, and give yourself all the time that you need, to make sure that you?re doing what?s right.

Find out regardless of whether your doctor has hospital privileges. Even if the procedure is not being done at the medical center and it is being carried out in the office. Hospitals have very strict standards for surgeons. If your physician does not have these rights, it is very important that you simply discover why.

Your doctor ought to provide you with the info about the complication rate he has had previously, with the particular procedure you are thinking about. He?ll not be able to go into great detail, because of privacy of clients. But, he will be able to provide you a wise decision regarding what can go wrong, and just what has generally gone wrong.

If you are having face surgery, be familiar with the necessity to ice and elevate your head after surgical treatment. Sleeping on a backrest or perhaps in a recliner is a much safer way to ensure your head stays elevated when compared to a stack of pillows. Prepare sleeping arrangements as well as ice packs before leaving for one?s surgical treatment.

Obtain a recommendation from your primary-care doctor if you need help picking out a cosmetic surgeon. While doing research into different doctors is important, it?s also crucial to have a recommendation by friends. You can also ask close friends, family members and associates if they have any experience with any of the surgeons you are considering.

As said in the beginning of the article, relaxation is very important in terms of recuperating from cosmetic surgery. Make sure to get some time off of work. Get plenty of sleep. Remember the suggestions in this article, so you can have the best experience possible.

Pro-Palestinian activists barred from West Bank visit

Israel and Jordan on Sunday barred pro-Palestinian US and European activists from trying to cross into the West Bank to deliver aid to students, a number of sources said.

Olivia Zemor, spokeswoman for the "Welcome to Palestine" group spearheading the mission, told AFP that one bus of activists was allowed through the Allenby Bridge border crossing by the Jordanian authorities but the Israelis turned them back.

"The (Israeli) authorities took all their passports and stamped 'entry denied' on all of them and told them to return," she said.

"The second bus was prevented (from crossing) by the Jordanians at the request of the Israeli authorities. They obeyed the orders of the Israelis," she said.

"One police officer told us that 'we got orders from Israel. We cannot let you leave'. We demanded explanation and nobody gave us any explanation. Then some of us demonstrated," she said.

An Israeli defence ministry official in Jerusalem confirmed that Israeli authorities had stopped the activists from entering the West Bank after a group of them arrived at the Allenby Bridge crossing.

"A small group of provocateurs, rioters and known troublemakers arrived at the Allenby crossing earlier today," the official said.

"The state of Israel exercised its right to refuse their entry, and they returned to Jordan."

Earlier Sunday, Walid Attalah, a spokesman for the "Welcome to Palestine" campaign in Jordan told AFP that the two buses had been prevented from crossing by the Jordanians.

"Two buses carrying 100 activists were not allowed to leave the Jordanian side" of Allenby Bridge Crossing, also known as King Hussein Bridge between the West Bank and Jordan, Attalah said.

Atallah said the "activists left the buses and started to demonstrate near the checkpoint. One of them fainted and was taken to hospital."

As part of the campaign, aimed at highlighting Israel's control over entry to the occupied territories, the activists sought to provide Palestinian students with a tonne of toys, pens, notebooks and other supplies.

"This is our fourth initiative to enter Palestine," Zemor told a news conference before leaving for the crossing, around 35 kilometres (20 miles) southeast of Amman.

"We have around 100 participants, from France, Belgium, Spain, Switzerland, the United States, aged between 10 and 50. All kinds of people, from all backgrounds and religions. They are all motivated to visit Palestine."

Five school buses drove the activists to the crossing as they chanted "Free Palestine!" and sang Palestinian traditional songs. Some wore T-shirts with "I have a dream" printed on them, while others flashed V-for-victory sign.

The campaigners tried to enter the occupied West Bank through Israel in July 2011 and April 2012, but the authorities at Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion airport denied them entry.

The activists, who had planned to stay for a week in the West Bank, say their mission comes at the invitation of Bethlehem governor Abdel-Fatah Hamayel.

Some activists had been sceptical in advance they would be allowed in.

"I tried in July last year and April, but the Israelis put me in prison for one day. I expect they will reject us again just like they did before. It is ridiculous and a shame," American volunteer Michael Rabb told AFP.

Complete Guidelines to Health and Fitness: Recommended ...

Fistulas are common in Crohn's disease
and occur in the perianal region or are internal, between intestinal
structures or between the intestine and other organs such as the bladder
or the abdominal wall. This article, published in the journal
"Digestion", presents treatments and their outcome.

Medical therapy is the main option for perianal fistulas once abscesses, if present, have been drained. Antibiotics such as metronidazole and ciprofloxacin are efficacious treatments, though they do not introduce complete healing. Withdrawal of these agents tends to lead to re-exacerbation of the disease. Immunomodulators such as azathioprine and 6-mercaptopurine, or methotrexate should be given early in the disease. They are an effective agent both in closing and in maintaining closure of fistulas, though the onset of response can be delayed. In case of resistance to immunomodulators, infliximab, a chimeric monoclonal antibody, should be given. Cyclosoporin A can be used as a treatment in the acute phase, but patients should receive concomitant immunomodulators (azathioprine or 6-mercaptopurine) for maintenance treatment. Internal fistulas are usually associated with a more aggressive disease and often require surgery, such as fistulotomy or proctectomy.

The cumulative risk for fistulas in patients with Crohn's disease is 33% after 10 years and 50% after 20 years. Perianal fistulas are the most common (54%). The management of fistulizing Crohn's disease necessitates a close collaboration between gastroenterologists and surgeons.

Energy Efficiency - Economics not 'range anxiety' deterring potential ...

Economics not ?range anxiety' deterring potential buyers of electric and rechargeable hybrid cars

Last month we reported?that, even with government subsidies on offer to purchasers of qualifying electric vehicles, that the economics of buying an electric versus a conventional fuel vehicle is far from clear for consumers.

An International Transport Forum policy Brief for June 2012 entitled ?Electric Cars: Ready for prime time?? reported that electric cars cost ?4k to ?5k more to their owners than an equivalent fossil fuel car over the vehicle?s lifetime, but, with electric cars much cheaper to run per mile, overall price differentials depends on travel distances over the lifetime of the vehicle.

The greater an electric car travels, the more attractively it compares to a similar fossil-fuelled model. Yet most electric cars are constrained by their travel range.

Consumers will also have varying attitudes towards such differed savings.

A report in this weekend?s Financial Times, as well as by JD Power/LMC Automotive, suggests the timing of the introduction first crop of electric and rechargeable hybrid cars has been unfortunate, adversely affected by current lowering oil prices and a depressed economy.

The FT article 'Electric cars struggle to build momentum' (registration required) found that manufacturers, including Audi, are scaling back plans for launch of electric vehicles due to poor market reaction to early movers such as Nissan, with its Leaf, and GM?s Chevrolet Volt. ??

Considerations such as charging infrastructure and ?range anxiety? were thought likely to be foremost for potential buyers but, according to the FT, ?carmakers say that most people buying or testing early electric cars have coped well with the need to plug in, as long as they could recharge at home or work. Instead, say industry analysts, consumers are rejecting plug-in cars because they find them too expensive for what they offer - even after subsidies like the ?5,000 grant available in the UK, or the $7,500 offered in the US.?

The FT report that ?In Britain, only about 800 consumers registered vehicles eligible for the plug-in car grant in the first half of this year.?

Quoting Lacey Plache, chief economist with Edmunds.com, the US car-buying website, ?The cost of a plug-in car is so much greater than a conventional car of the same size that people aren?t going to make up the cost differential during the period when they own the car ? and that?s even with government subsidies?.

The JD Power/LMC Auto report 'US Monthly Retail Sales ? June 2012' includes analysis of sales figures for electric vehicles in the US. According to John Humphrey, senior vice president of global automotive operations at JD Powerand Associates,??Gas prices in the United States have fallen steadily since April, which has changed demand for hybrid and electric vehicles. As gas prices increased from $3.33 per gallon in November 2011 to $3.84 per gallon in April 2012, the combined share of retail sales of hybrid and electric vehicle sales increased from 1.7% to 4.6% during the same period. However, as gas prices have dropped since April, so has the market share for hybrid and electric vehicles, which has been trending downward during the past two months and is now at 3.4%."

?The hybrid and electric vehicle market closely follows gas prices, which demonstrates that while there is consumer interest in hybrid and electric vehicles, demand is heavily influenced by the economic environment, rather than pure interest in the technology,? said John Humphrey. ?Until we see alternative powertrain growth without rising gas prices, we won?t see the market share growth that many automakers are hoping for.?

The JD Power/LMC Automotive report also predicts that hybrid and electric vehicle sales in the US will account for 3.2% of total light-vehicle in 2012.

Droid Incredible 4G LTE hits Verizon on July 5

HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE

As it was foretold, If you've been holding out for the HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE on Verizon, this is the week, folks. It'll be available starting July 5 for $149.99 on contract and after a $50 mail-in rebate.

You'll no doubt remember this phone from our hands-on at CTIA in New Orleans, as well as our comparison to the HTC EVO 4G LTE, and it's important to remember that the D4GLTE, in additional to having a ridiculously long name, is not a member of the HTC One family. You'll find many of the same software improvements, including Beats audio and Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich, but it's lacking the separate image processing of the HTC One line, and that's a big deal. But the Snapdragon S4 processor should still be snappy enough, and the shooter, despite not being HTC's best, is still 8 megapixels at f/2.2 with a 28 mm lens. So there's that.

MacBook Pro Retina Display Teardown Reveals The Changes Apple Made To Make It So Thin

Apple mentioned during its unveiling of the MacBook Pro last week that it has made some substantial changes to the construction of the notebook?s display to help make it super thin. Unlike existing MacBooks, the new Pro does away with a cover glass and case to measure just 1.5mm thin, essentially making the entire display just an LCD panel.

Following their teardown of the device last week, iFixit has taken their screwdrivers to the new MacBook Pro?s display to see exactly how Apple?s changes have made the screen so thin. ?Apple did not design and build a 1.5 mm thin LCD panel,? iFixit says. Instead, they did ?something exceptional with the design of this display.?

Instead of constructing the new display out of an LCD panel sandwiched between a case and a cover glass ? like most MacBook displays ? Apple has instead used the MacBook Pro?s aluminum casing as the frame itself. Furthermore, it has done away with a cover glass altogether, leaving the LCD panel exposed as the frontmost piece of glass.

Whether or not this means the display is slightly weaker and that it?s more prone to damage will become clearer over time ? probably as users begin to drop the device. But of course, Apple must be fairly confident about its strength.
